Whitianga Police are investigating alleged assaults and possible wilful damage relating to '1080” protests in area last week.

Sergeant Andrew Morrison says the protest was predominately a peaceful one, concerning an issue for which the community and most of New Zealand seem to be unsure and undecided about.

'In a democracy both sides have rights and the investigation of these incidents will hopefully encourage appropriate behaviour in the future.”

On October 17, assault allegations were made in relation to '1080” protests on Joan Gaskell Drive and enquiries are continuing, says Andrew.

People with information relating to the alleged assaults are urged to contact their nearest police station.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously via the Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 line.

Doc should just commission a 747 jumbo jet, Fill it with 1080 and start at the top of the North Island and spread it all the way to Stewart Island. The job will be done right for once and for all. They tell us it is harmless.. Go hard... LOL

Who ever told us it is harmless? I've never heard that said. Yes it's an undesirable poison, but it's the only quick knock-down fix we have until something better is found. The alternative is widespread forest destruction caused by tree climbing pests of one sort or another, whose population explodes exponentially if we don't intervene. I say hats off to DOC for doing an excellent job albeit unpopular in some circles where there is a shortage of forward vision. Sadly, many people just do not realise how serious the threat is if we sit back and do nothing. A lot of research is being done, especially regarding possum eradication, but it takes time, so a quick knock-down strategy is vital - Unfortunately 1080 is all we have for the time being, so we have to live with it.
