One dead in crash near Waihi

UPDATED 3.40PM: One person has died in a crash on State Highway 2, near Waihi.

Police were called at around 2.25pm following a crash between a car and a truck near Dean Crescent.

One driver died at the scene, while the other driver was not seriously injured.

The Serious Crash Unit will be attending and the road is likely to be closed for some time.

Diversions are being put in place down Waitawheta Road, which is between Paeroa and Waihi.

Access to Waihi is limited and motorists are asked to avoid travel if possible. 

EARLIER:

Motorists are being asked to avoid State Highway 2, near Waihi, following a serious crash this afternoon.

The NZ Transport Agency says a serious crash has been reported in the area and emergency services are enroute.

The NZTA advises northbound traffic to take the following route: Right into Waitawheta Rd, Left into Pukekauri rd, right onto Pukekauri rd, left into Frankton Rd to Victoria st to SH2. Southbound traffic in reverse.
