The motocylcist who died in a single vehicle crash on SH36 on Sunday night was Morris Percy Te Wata Poata, age 46, of Tauranga.

Police extend their sympathies to the family and friends of Mr Poata

Before the motorcycle crashed, Mr Poata overtook a small family sedan travelling on SH36 towards the Lakes subdivision.

Police would like to speak to the driver of this small family sedan-type car that was following the motorcycle shortly before it crashed.

Police are keen to speak to these witnesses to establish how the crash occurred.

The crash occured at the Takitimu/Taurikura Drives roundabout at about 7pm.

Mr Poata was rushed to Tauranga Hospital in critical condition, where he died overnight.

Police investigating the cause of the crash are appeal for any witnesses to come forward.
