At 6.05pm tonight a vehicle travelling on Jelicoe Street in Te Puke has left the road and collided with a large tree.

Stuff is reporting that a northern fire communications spokesperson confirmed one person had died and that a second person is in critical condition after being freed from the vehicle and has been transported to Tauranga Hospital.

A Fire and Emergency northern communications spokesman said fire trucks were at the scene of the crash at the intersection of Jellicoe St and Cameron Rd, and police and St John were on their way.

The spokesman said the car had hit a lamp post.

Two people were trapped inside the vehicle and fire crews were working to get them out.

There are road closures which will affect vehicles travelling through Te Puke, and local diversions are in place.

Drivers should expect delays.

I love stories with happy endings. Otherwise, it is quite unbelievable how many vehicles are hitting trees these days? People need to wake up and smell the roses.... learn to drive before they wake up and smell the inside of an ambulance.... or as in this case.... worse. Did you let Sunlive know what you saw factlet?
