The Tauranga CBD Waterfront was packed last night, with fans watching the third test match of the DHL New Zealand Lions Series 2017.

The free public screening of the All Blacks v The British & Irish Lions brought out families wrapped in their woolies to the family-friendly fanzone.

The live broadcast on the big screen began at 6.30pm, with the test match kicking off at 7.35pm. Some food and drink options were available for purchase in the fanzone, which was alcohol-free. People also brought their own picnics and snacks.

The CBD restaurants and bars were open and generally booked out, with people eating before the match.

Blankets, chairs and beanbags covered the grassed area with everyone wrapped up warm, some wearing their favourite team's colours.

The match itself was far from the drubbing All Blacks (and some Lions) fans expected, though, with two All Black tries in the first half proving to be the only times either team crossed the try line.

The first try of the match came about following a stunning intercept by Beauden Barrett while the All Blacks were under pressure at their end of the field. He made good ground, and with the help of Ngani Laumape brought the the game up to the Lions' five-metre line.

Although the Lions managed their own intercept, the ball was turned over the All Blacks again, and a cross-field kick by Beauden was prevented from going into touch by brother Jordie, who masterfully bounced the ball back to eventual try-scorer Laumape.

Jordie himself scored the second and final try of the night in the 35th minute, his first test points for the All Blacks.

However, precision goal-kicking from the Lions' Owen Farrell and Elliot Daly saw them gain 15 points exclusively from penalties to level with the All Blacks in the 77th minute.

The home side were then denied another shot at goal by referee Romain Poite, despite a Lions player catching the ball offside. The decision likely contributed the final result – an unsatisfying 15-15 draw that saw Eden Park quieter than usual after the final whistle.
