Expect delays on SH2 at Te Puna

Motorists travelling on State Highway 2 north of Tauranga are being warned to expect delays as work on the Te Puna roundabout continues this weekend.

The two-lane roundabout replaces the Te Puna Minden Road intersection, and the New Zealand Transport Agency says it will significantly improve safety for motorists travelling on the route.

Work started in June 2016, with the initial focus on relocating power services, removing the old Te Puna Hall, and forming a new local road into the BP station.

NZTA highways manager Niclas Johansson says construction of the new roundabout and local road links is expected to be complete in July 2017, depending on the weather.

'The project is at a critical stage, with the contractors working hard to widen the site, construct the roundabout and seal the road before winter sets in.”

Niclas adds the NZTA is working hard to minimise disruptions, but they can't always be avoided due to the nature of the work and high traffic volumes –20,000 vehicles travelling through the area each day.

'Some delays are inevitable over the next few months, and people should factor in an additional ten to fifteen minutes for journeys during the morning or evening peak.”

The roundabout is part of an overall plan to reduce death and serious injury crashes on SH2 between Waihi and Tauranga, and should 'make a big difference in terms of safety once it is finished”.

'Roundabouts naturally slow traffic and reduce the chance of head on or side impact crashes, reducing the risk of death or serious injury if someone makes a mistake and crashes.

'We understand the disruption is frustrating and we appreciate everyone's patience and understanding while work is underway.”

I just can't believe that this project actually got off the ground. How did this intersection get a higher priority than Omokoroa? In a couple of years this intersection will revert to a country road when the new road gets built. Meanwhile traffic is backed up back to town and out past Omokoroa while the dammed thing gets built! And to all the sheeple who turn off at Snodgrass road all your doing is creating a bigger bottleneck at TePuna Station road so you gain nothing! The people who approved this stupid project should be named so we know just who actually is responsible for this utter waste of taxpayers money that quite rightly could have been better used elsewhere. I've said it before that there are too many people in positions of power in this country that need to be kicked to the kerb!

you are exactly right, all they needed to do was put a 50kmph sign at each end and POLICE IT,but NO spending all these $MILLIONS to let the SNOBS out of THE SNOB HILL, ,i did call NZTA about this, you may as well talk to a BRICK,(useless sons of a gun) they DONT CARE,about your ideas. Now Kiwifruit Season imagine the hold up with FRUIT getting to packhouses, they wont name names,as it (could have been SIMPLE) who signed it off, like the new rail to Airport from Auckland, to start in 30 yrs,Tepuna should have been finished by now, when i come by other day there were 4 guys standing by ute talking 1 hr later coming back they were still there, my gosh, its a blinkin nightmare now and still only half way,my thoughts only,Sunlive is No1 for NEWS,Thankyou.10-4 out.

All you need to do is have a look at the ratepayers along snob hill and you will make the connection with this white elephant. There has been very little accomplished with this 'slush fund project' apart from , removing the dumb 30kmh speed limit to 50kmh and dropping some metal on the road. They must be paying them on an hourly rate?

Heaven help us if we haven't had delays already. Is NZTA telling us it is going to get worse. At present the traffic is gridlocked from Waihi Rd overbridge to BP between before 4pm to after 6.30pm.Complain if you don't like the current situation - it may make a difference.
