Single car crash near TEL

UPDATED 2.16PM: A single-car crash near Papamoa is being described as a "big smash" by a witness who drove past.

The man, who did not want to be named, says the crash happened on State Highway 2, heading towards Papamoa.

"The impact spun a little hatchback out, which took out a light pole.

"This happened about 300m east Bruce Rd. The dust was still in the air when I went past and people were stopping to help when I drove past."

The driver of the vehicle involved in the crash says she veered into the median barrier after her steering wheel locked up.

"I slammed on my brakes and hit the pole. There were no other vehicles involved."

Reports are coming in of a crash on State Highway 2, near the Tauranga Eastern Link.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says the crash is 2km north of Domain Road.

Two cars are believed to be involved in the crash.

Motorists are being warned to expect delays.
