More than $9,000 has been raised in a charity ride organised by Bayride Motorcycles.

Three hundred bikers turned up at the Tauranga store last Sunday for the ride, which cost $20 a head to take part in.

The event was a means of raising money to help the recovery of motorcyclist Christine Welch, who needs a prosthetic leg after suffering injuries in a high-speed collision earlier last year.

Bayride Motorcycles owner Damian Fleming says he was blown away by the turnout.

'We were expecting maybe 150. We had people turn up from Auckland, Hamilton, Taupo, and Wahaktane, as well as Tauranga.”

He says they also received donations from people who weren't able to take part in the actual ride, which went around the outskirts of Tauranga and up to McLaren Falls.

He says Christine was also touched by the support

'She couldn't stop crying from the numbers that turned up.”

The donations were topped up by the Greasy Dogs MC, who contributed $1000. MTA also helped out, with their volunteers cooking the barbecue – which needed a few extra sausages.

'We ran out soft drinks pretty quick,” laughs Damian.

He's pleased to say 100 per cent of the money will be going to Christine, to help her during her recovery.

'ACC have been awesome, but there's only so much they can do,” he says.

The money will help her partner take unpaid leave from work to look after her, as well as necessary modifications to vehicles to help accommodate her prosthetic leg.

Damian says he and partner Catherine are glad to have played a key part in the fundraising.

'We're so proud we can use the business for that purpose.”
