Landmark trees felled

Two landmark pine trees in the Mount Maunganui's soper Reserve were felled this week by council contractors Griffin Tree Services for safety reasons.

A Tauranga City Council spokesperson explains the trees were felled as a precaution because they are old and declining.

There have been limb failures in the past and there was evidence of decay in the stem.

The two trees produced about 25 tonnes of wood which has been removed by the contractor.

Tauranga City Council will replant in the winter of 2017.

'We wouldn't necessarily replant natives but we would plant something appropriate to the site,” says parks and environment team leader Warren Aitken.

'The two trees produced about 25 tonnes of wood which has been removed by the contractor.' As firewood is this $5000 or a so a bonus for the contractor or deducted from the cost of removal

Gift it

Seeing as how the contractor was being paid to fell the trees it would be nice if they gave the wood to the elderly or those that needed it but can't afford to buy it.
