Mixed response to Wairoa cycle bridge

The community has offered up varying responses to news of a cycleway being built across the Wairoa river. File photo.

Local businesses love it, but many SunLive readers can't stand the idea.

The recent announcement of the design for a new $6.5 million cycle/walkway bridge across the Wairoa River has been met with a range of responses.

Waimarino Adventure Park marketing manager Sam Cameron thinks it's a great project.

'It's good for the community and gives access right through from Bethlehem to Omokoroa. It's going to be a great asset for the area.

'Visually, it's really appealing as well.”

Nourish Café owner Carly Ward thinks the design is fantastic.

'I have seen the design, and I think it looks pretty cool. We have a lot of people who cycle out to us. In fact, we just had some cyclists in the weekend saying how great it would be once the cycle bridge is finished, because they'll be able to all meet at the café.

'It will really open up this side of the bridge.”

Heaven & Home owner Julie Bourke is delighted as well.

'I saw it on Facebook and I thought: best thing ever. It looks great. Tauranga needs this sort of thing as much as possible.”

Like Carly, Julie thinks it will be great for business, as people will be able to cycle over with ease.

Priority One communications manager Annie Hill agrees with the endorsements from businesses, calling it a 'wonderful initiative.”

'It's going to create something iconic for the sub-region, and will be attractive to both tourists and locals. People will actually come to Tauranga to use it.”

She says the cutting edge design will also promote Tauranga as a place of innovation.

However, many SunLive readers have expressed reservations about the project.

Commenters on the original story asked where the boat ramp has disappeared to, while others lamented their rates were being spent on something they would never use.

On Facebook, Tracey Gove commented suggesting the bridge was a waste of funds.

'Build some temporary housing or something useful with the money,” she says.

Michael Mckenzie's sentiments were similar, asking why the council is 'wasting money on a pointless bridge when there's families living in vans.”

Sarah Hall questions 'why would you build a bridge next to a bridge?” She suggests a ‘clip-on' footpath to the existing bridge would be a better idea.

Not all the community feedback is negative, however. Jake Jones argues 'if there was no money spent on the place to make it attractive to people to live here it would be a s***hole and we would have no money to spend in the first place.”

The bridge is expected to be completed by 2018.

Seems

Seems a lot of money to spend just on cyclists when that amount could be spent for the benefit of all residents on many other type of projects.

Traffic Hazard

The location of this cycleway bridge has been chosen, I can only assume, so it can be seen from the SH2 Wairoa bridge and have a great background, great location for such a monument. It is not the most ideal location for cyclists, a better location would have been near the railway bridge. However I have no doubt this new bridge will become a serious traffic hazard on SH2, drivers will slow down on the Wairoa bridge to look at the new bridge, they want to get closer and start looking for parking space, etc.

I agree with both sides.

Beautiful looking and proably would get a lot of use but the reality is there are families living on the street...a pretty bridge isn't going to help them at all. Time to re-think the priorities.

What ever happens we are all entitled to ...

Like anything we are all entitled to our opinions. If this provides road safety for both cyclists and drivers it is great. The cost of an accident or a life is not easy to place.

here we go again

I agree with Sarah Hall whats wrong with a clip on, This is probably $8 million with all (CONS)ultant fees and all the HANGERS ON,a bridge is already there, just be careful croosing it, it will get built anyway, like the roundabout at TePuna, its now been put down to 50kmph,which i suggested to NZTA 4 times and this speed will not cause accidents,NO ONE listens, cause someone has a FINGER in the PIE,like those in AUCKLAND, and got caught, my Tuppence worth,No1 Thankyou 10-4 out.

Waste

As a cyclist who will be using this bridge to cycle to Omokoroa, I think this bridge is a huge waste of money. Tax funded money. Why the expense-sure it looks nice but its grossly over priced.

What a waste

I cant believe that this kind of money is being spent on people who pay nothing for the use of the road and the new bridge. Whilst this travesty goes on residence have the nightmare of playing Russian roulette trying to get onto the highway from the Wairoa Rd. A clip on would do the job at a fraction of the price. Who is the dreamer that gets their wild fantasies to come true.

Beautiful, costly bridge, to where?...

I agree with comments posted...beautiful but dangerous for rubberneckers travelling on Wairoa bridge,..and where does such a beauty lead to?, surely if the Omokoroa cycle trail goes ahead, the better option would be on the other side of bridge, and whats wrong with a clip-on?, certainly it would be the more frugal option to fulfil a need, and leave money for more urgent priorities.

golly gosh

Just thinking, this $7million could put a bypass in Kati kati, immmm, wonder did they think of that,(DONT THINK SO) you need a brain for that, i thought it was more important to keep trucks flowing, anyway when the mess at Tepuna is finished it will be backed up for Africa,my shillings worth, Thankyou No1 in the Bay, 10-4 out,

Big $'s

I wonder how many bikers/walkers will actually use it compared to some experts projected usage forecast. I live in Bethlehem and both bike & walk so maybe use it once ?? once a year or whatever. Perhaps this is just too much to spend for bikers & walkers when something simple will achieve the same thing of getting people across the river

Just get on and build it

Tauranga has more than its fair share of doom casters and naysayers. This cycle/pedestrian bridge is precisely what our city needs, ignore these jeremiah's and take our city forward. Max Lewis, Mt Maunganui

I like it

and the arch above it does look like the shape of The Mount. In fact exactly like it before they whacked the top off it!

Bridge to the future

Some "naysayers" asking where does it go. The future will have more paths bikes, e-bikes will be cheaper and used more for getting to work. Get your heads out of the sand!!! This will be used and remembered more and more as a local icon, long after that poor family has found a home the funding for housing comes through. There will always be someone in need for charity and some entity to help fill the chasm. Don't begrudge the cost of creative ingenuity when it stares us in the face!
