December closure for Mauao tracks

The Waikorire and Oruahine tracks on Mauao will be closed for a week in December while the Waikorire track is resurfaced ahead of the busy summer season.

It is scheduled to take five days, from December 5-9, but is weather dependent and may run into the following week.

The Oruahine track should only be closed for the first two days of work, says Tauranga City Council's manager: parks & recreation, Warren Aitken.

The track closure was originally scheduled for November 7-11, but was delayed while Council reviewed the methodology with the contractor to ensure safety on the difficult terrain.

'It was important to us to get the resurfacing done ahead of the busy summer period to ensure visitors and locals alike can enjoy the reserve safely,” says Warren.

The closure will be in effect from the stone steps at the Mount Maunganui Beach entrance up to the summit.

The base track will remain open and unaffected, and the public will still be able to access the Mauao summit from the Pilot Bay entrance, via the 4WD track.
