UPDATED 11.30am: A caller to Sunlive says the car chased by police in Cambridge Raod last night had earlier sped away from the Te Puna service station, where it was stopped.

Areas of Cambridge Road were cordoned off while police were involved in a pursuit. Multiple calls to the 0800SUNLIVE news hotline report a heavy police presence around the area near River Oaks Drive.

A caller to Sunlive Te Puna says the car sped away from the Te Puna service station before being chased to Cambridge Road.

'I was in the service station there and I saw them stop the car. Police shouted out over loudspeaker to ‘get of the car, get out of the car', like that and next thing he just booted it something awful.

'He Just drove over road cones went like hell towards Bethlehem. Everyone was stunned at the service station.

'There's no way in the world he wanted to be stopped by the cops that's for sure.”

The caller who didn't want to give his name says the driver arrived at the Te Puna service station driving slowly in front of a patrol car.

'He was going quite slow in front of the cop car but not stopping. He certainly didn't want to get of the car for the cops that's for sure.”

A caller says a speeding vehicle came from the Katikati direction and could have been spiked as its tyre was "exploding" as it travelled through Bethlehem.

it's thought the car pulled a U-turn on or near the expressway, clipped another car and lost a wheel, and turned onto Cambridge Road. The caller says there are gouge marks in the road.

A car was seen abandoned off the road, in a bush. The callers all say there are "cops everywhere."

Tauranga police dayshift say there is a record of an overnight arrest for unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, there is no record of an arrest for failing to stop, and other driving related offences.
