An online abuse and harassment service launches today after research shows 56 per cent of Kiwis are concerned about cyber safety and cybersecurity.

The service is part of NetSafe, New Zealand's online safety non-government organisation.

NetSafe will receive, access and investigate complaints of harm caused by digital communication under the Harmful Digital Communications Act – an Act which was passed in 2015 to provide quick, efficient and affordable legal way to get help if someone is receiving online abuse.

The free service will provide help and advice to internet users across the country who are experiencing online harassment.

NetSafe's chief executive Martin Cocker understands why people have concerns about risks online from seeing first-hand the effects online harassment and cyber bullying has.

'Our new service will help to minimise harm for those affected by providing a quick resolution process. We'll also continue to provide a range of services to help individuals, schools, families and businesses stay safe online,” says Martin.

NetSafe are able to advise users if there is anything that can be done to stop abuse, under the Act, to work with those involved and liaise with online content hosts to remove harmful content.

They are able to inform those involved of the likely outcome if they were to continue to the District court with a civil complaint.

NetSafe chairperson Rick Shera understands harmful digital communications is a serious issue but says it's important to keep a balanced view.

'The expansion of NetSafe's services beyond the education and the advice we currently provide is a significant step towards ensuring everyone has a positive online experience and we gladly accept responsibility.” NetSafe will be taking free calls from Monday about issues concerning cyberbullying, online abuse and harassment on 0800 NETSAFE.
