Anxious wait for Edlin

Although progress results have all but confirmed the new mayor and council, Bev Edlin is still in with a chance and is nervously awaiting the Preliminary Results later this evening. Bev is only 62 votes behind Catherine Stewart in the Otumoetai-Pyes Pa ward.

Special votes are being counted, although the absolute final vote won't be known until Thursday.

For Bev, the large number of blank voting papers is cause for consternation.

'What you do find in this area is a huge amount of blank voting papers – 783 in fact,” says Bev.

'I'm curious as to why so many of them were blank.

'People have told me that they only voted for me and no one else, as a strategy. So whether that has an impact on what's considered a ‘blank' voting paper, I don't know.”

Bev was among seven councillors elected for the first time in 2013, of whom two – John Robson and Matt Cowley – are definitely out.

In the ward vote Larry Baldock took 4,265 votes with Catherine Stewart taking 4,096. Bev has 4,034 votes. This is based on about 98 per cent of the votes having been counted. The progress result does not include some special votes and votes returned on Saturday that remain in transit to the processing centre.

After preliminary results are released later this sevening the offical final result will be available next week.

seems to me Catherine Stewart on 4096 votes and Bev Edlin on 3403 are a lot further than 62 votes apart. But maybe that comes back to reporting accuracy and sub editing...once again? It would also seem that Dr Edlin should maybe have given more thought to the affect she would have on council and good governance of this city when she decided to sue another Councillor for defamation...it has bought both of them down, personally I think the other party did more good work than anybody in the previous council.

got rid of a few but not enough, the same hangers on are still there, + i dont understand why people voting for old councilors that got TGA in debt in the 1st place, just look at the stats TCC is run by only 20% of the population because people failed to vote

Same old rhetoric about debt !

Some people are devoid of reality ! Debt is an excellent mechanism to fund a developing city because it means that those who will benefit from infrastructure in the future funded by the debt ,share the cost. And only about 50% of the debt is ratepayer funded. The 2013 - 16 Council fell into line despite election rhetoric because debt is sensible. That's most debt - not all debt. Note Robson now weaseling out of his money back guarantee. No conditions were mentioned when he was elected.

So many talk of a city moving positively forward, yet the step back to the misfits of previous terms and activities seems likely, unless by miracle the leopard has changed it spots in the last three years?
