Three killed in Huntly crash

Three people, including two children, are dead after a car and truck collided on State Highway 1, near Huntly.

A truck and a car collided on State Highway 1 near Rayners Road around 2.40pm, says a statement from police.

"Of the five people in the car, three have died, one is in a critical condition and one is in a serious condition.

"The truck driver is uninjured."

The Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to Huntly to airlift an injured woman and a nine-year-old girl to Waikato Hospital.

"Due to the built up area surrounding the crash scene, the helicopter landed on the road after the area was secured by emergency service personnel on the ground," says a spokesperson for the rescue helicopter.
"The crash involved a car and a light truck, and the Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter transported a woman and a nine-year-old girl to Waikato Hospital. Both were treated at the scene for multiple injuries and their condition was reported as serious."

Diversions are in place through Te Kauwhata and Te Ohaki Road.

The three are still trapped in the car.

Both north and south lanes of State Highway 1 are closed and diversions are in place after the accident near Rayners Road.
