Dune planting day in Papamoa

If you love Papamoa's coastline and want to help preserve it for future generations to come then head along to a major planting day this weekend.

Organised by Coastcare Bay of Plenty with assistance from Forest and Bird, more than 1000 plants will be planted at the Papamoa Beach Road reserve near Macallum Place on Sunday, from 10am.

Te Puke Forest & Bird spokesperson Carole Long says the planting day follows in the wake of a very successful public meeting held at the Papamoa Community Centre last month.

'More than 50 people attended to learn about the value of the dunes and express interest in the future restoration of this unique landscape,” she explains.

The meeting saw Dune Restoration Trust member Mark Dean give a presentation on the structure and value of the dune system, and emphasised how the stretch of dunes from Papamoa Domain to Taylor Road is quite remarkable, says Carole.

'It's remarkable in that it is an intact and largely unmodified dune system right in the middle of an urban community. He also made the point that healthy and extensive dunes are the best protection against natural events such as storms and tsunami.”

In the event of bad weather, Carole says the planting will go on regardless and will not be postponed.

'Rain is great for the plants, not so much for our poor volunteers, but the planting will go on rain or shine,” says Carole.

The Coastcare programme is delivered through a partnership between the Bay of Plenty Regional Council, the Western Bay of Plenty, Ōpōtiki and Whakatāne, the Tauranga City Council, and the Department of Conservation.

The Papamoa Dunes planting day is on at Access 14.6 on Papamoa Beach Road reserve near Macallum Place, on Sunday, July 24, from 10am.
