Moko’s abusers to be sentenced

The two people who pleaded guilty to a charge of manslaughter following the death of a Taupo toddler will be sentenced today.

David Haewera and Tania Shailer are due to appear in Rotorua High Court for sentencing.

Anti-child abuse protests were held in Tauranga and the rest of the country as two people were sentenced for the death of three-year-old Moko Rangioheriri. Watch a video of the Tauranga protest here.

Moko Rangioheriri, aged three, was assaulted during a two-month period in Taupo after his mother left him with the couple while she was in Auckland looking after another child in Starship Hospital.

He died on August 10, 2015, with a postmortem examination revealing he'd been a victim of abuse for a number of months. Read more here.

An anti-child abuse rally will be held in Tauranga today to coincide with Haewera and Shailer's sentencing.

The Tauranga rally for Moko will take place at the Edgewater Fan on The Strand from 9am.

Other marches are also planned throughout the country, including in Rotorua.

I have to agree with the sentiments expressed by iknow. I cannot understand how adults can be so callous and brutal towards a child who is completely at their mercy. A few years in prison is not sufficient a punishment or deterrent to these adults who live at the bottom of the barrel. Why should we show the adults mercy when they showed the child none?

I want to know why the plea bargain was graded down to "manslaughter". good grief - eye for an eye I believe. The law is a joke. We have lost a little soul who was abused beyond description - how dare they even take the air that we breathe ...,.
