Traffic gridlocked after crash

Traffic has become gridlocked after a serious crash on State Highway 29A in Tauranga.

A Welcome Bay Road resident has called SunLive to say traffic has become 'gridlocked” on Taipari Street and Te Hono Street.

The witness says traffic travelling north on SH 29A at the Maungatapu roundabout has been diverted down Manugatapu Road.

However, Maungatapu Road is closed at the SH29A on ramp and traffic has flowed over the Taipari Street overhead bridge and become gridlocked on Te Hono Street and Taipari Street.

The gridlock was caused after a serious crash on the Baypark side of the Maungatapu Bridge earlier this morning.

Five people were injured, two seriously after a four car crash on SH29A. One person had to be cut from the wreckage and was transported to Tauranga Hospital.

The Serious Crash Unit is now investigating the cause of the crash.

Transit New Zealand Agency says both lanes on SH29A are close in both directions and diversions are in place at Maungatapu roundabout and Baypark.

Yesterday's accident made me realise how inadequate our roads are for our growing population. Took me one hour to make a 15 minute commute when the main highway was closed. Made me appreciate what the Aucklanders that are moving here are trying to escape. Hope TCC can see the future issues and have a solution in the mix.

Did it really make you realise how inadequate our naughty roads are? Or, does it really actually make you think how inadequate many of our drivers are these days? I have never actually seen a road jump up and shake a car off it? We have great roads... simply too many useless drivers imo. People need to learn that the pedal on the right can actually stop half way down or less... it doesn't have to be either on the floor or your foot off it. Our roads only need maintenance, the drivers need intelligence...

Doesn't matter what your said solutions are, you can't fix stupid with some people. So that being said, accidents will always happen, and therefore we need decent main roads that allow traffic to continue unhindered even when there is an accident.
