Meeting to decide city spending

Approval to spend millions of dollars of ratepayers' funds is being sought from Tauranga City councillors tomorrow in a meeting to decide the futures of several city projects.

Councillors are being asked to approve $915,000 for lighting for the Bay Cricket Oval at Blake Park.

Spending decisions are being made by council tomorrow.

Tauranga Hockey is seeking $600,000 from the council for another hockey turf at Blake Park.

The council funded Matapihi community sewerage scheme - costing ratepayers $1.7 million over two financial years - is also awaiting the councillors' vote.

The approval sought for the $4.5 million in airport terminal precinct expansion and enhancements also requires council approval.

The proposal brings forward capital expenditure of $2.1 million from the 2017/18 and 2022/23 years and requires an additional $2.4 million that would be funded from airport operations.

The Papamoa Surf Club is seeking $1.199 million for a replacement surf club. The city council staff recommendation is for $100,000.

In community development funding applications, The Elms wants a $38,340 increase on the $150,000 it is already receiving from ratepayers.

Other community projects awaiting approval are the $139,320 Maungarangi Reserve playground, the $65,000 Adler Road playground, plus $10,000 for Sydenham Botanical Park and $17,000 for archaeology and footpaths at the Gate Pa reserve. And $100,000 for the Kopurererua Valley planting project.

The meeting starts at 9am instead of the usual 1pm.

Amazing just how easy it is to spend other peoples money! Nearly a million dollars for lights that may be used a few times a year (Probably at ratepayers expense)? $17,000 for a footpath in one of the smallest reserves in the city? what's wrong with the grass that is there at the moment? When do we stop paying for the Kopurererua Valley and how many MORE years is this project going on for? It's just numbers on a page isn't it!! NICE TO HAVE THOUGH......

Bit of a Conflict of Interest here

The Papamoa Surf Club is seeking $1.199 million for a replacement surf club. The city council staff recommendation is for $100,000. I am well aware of the efforts to frustrate the these long overdue upgrades by staff. Included in the plan are options to generate funds from venue hire to mitigate the constant ratepayer subsidies BUT this may represents a potential risk to the private restaurant on our Reserve Land and the Crosby Papamoa Holiday Camp which the City Council has a profit share arrangement with. How many $hundreds of $1000s did staff recommend ratepayers give the Mount Surf Club for minor upgrades? See here: http://www.sunlive.co.nz/news/41910-papamoas-fight-clubhouse.html

Snouts in the trough from the likes of the hockey association who should be looking at their members to fund future growth having already had a chunk of ratepayers money. Have no problem with the airport or mataphi as these are essential services.

Still Wondering How It Cost For ???

Still Wondering How It Cost For The Fancy Lights In The Wharf St / Eat Street Fiasco. The lights went up, The lights fell down. Still no public report on what happened, how much it cost the ratepayer's of Tauranga, or who at Council is responsible. And yet they want to spend more !!! This CEO has set up in own dictatorship just like he did in Wellington. Research the Dominion Post to see what I'm talking about

No to them all

Sadly we don't have the money for any of these dream lists including the Papamoa Surf club extension. This will both cut into the precious dunes which a number of councillors in the past have fought to keep clear of buildings and cycle paths, and it will compete with privately owned venues in the area. It is TOTALLY UNFAIR for ratepayer subsidised groups to compete with private ratepaying businesses, whether it be bars or food outlets or whatever.

So true, spent a fortune and they all fall down ... nothing left of the spend up and still wondering why they even through about doing it in the first place.

This must stop

Frivolous spending on various "clubs" and social activities has to stop. Hobbies should be self funded, simple as that. My golf clubs need an upgrade, can I have some money please.

And it's a NO from me, but Murray?

It's time for Council to tell all these well meaning groups that enough is enough. It's also time for Council to UNSUBSIDISE entities that then compete with private ratepaying businesses. Whether it's Baywave and gyms or surflifesaving clubs and pubs, bars and restaurants, it is not on for such groups to get money from ratepayers then compete with private business. Murray Guy, I support you on many things, but imagine if a business that you worked hard in suddenly found itself with competition from ratepayer topped up clubs. Interesting how private art shops downtown closed down when creative tauranga, much funded by our largesse, set up a sales gallery.

Thank-you for this information. When it comes to giving away funding, it would seem that this council is VERY green politically. We have a very rapidly expanding population that is unlikely to slow for quite a while and yet we (Ratepayers) are being forced to fund footpaths, cycleways, civic centres and sporting facilities BEFORE improving the transportation nightmare that is our roading infrastructure. Those that have visited the misery of Auckland travel can expect the same here, unless something is done soon to improve the CORE RESPONSIBILITIES of our councils.
