Be bright, be safe, be seen

Tauranga cyclists are being reminded to be bright when riding their bikes this autumn and winter.

This week the annual Be Bright campaign returns to reminds cyclists to use lights on their bikes and to wear high-vis, reflective clothing when riding in wet weather and low-light conditions.

As part of the campaign checkpoints will be established at different high traffic spots across the city from 4.30pm to 5.30pm from today until Monday, May 16.

At these checkpoints Travel Safe and Tauranga City Council representatives will assess and provide reflective gear and lights to cyclists.

Travel Safe programme leader Karen Smith says cyclists' visibility to other road users, especially during times of low light and poor visibility, is essential to their safety.

'Bike Wise and NZ Police promote the use of front and rear lights and high visibility clothing in order to reduce risks to cyclists during low-light periods at dawn and dusk and in poor weather,” she says.

After being assessed those cyclists who have adequate lights will be rewarded with safe reflective cycling gear like backpack covers and arm bands, while those who don't will be fitted with a set of lights.

Cyclists will also be surveyed at each checkpoint and Karen says they'll all go into the draw to win $50 bike store vouchers.

ACC Workplaces and Toi Te Ora Workwell will also promote ‘Be bright, Be safe, Be Seen – Safe cycling' with give-aways and safety messages to workplaces, and police will also carry out a follow-up campaign to push the message.

The Be Bright campaign is being delivered locally in partnership between Bike Wise, Travel Safe, Tauranga City Council, Western Bay of Plenty District Council and New Zealand Police.
