Dog waste bag dispensers installed

In an effort to keep the land around Tauranga clean and green, Tauranga City Council has begun installing dog waste bag dispensers in local parks.

According to the Council, one in four homeowners own a pet dog and they create a lot of mess and now the Council is taking steps to ensure that dog owners can easily pick up after their pooches.

An example of the dog waste bag dispensers.

Animal Services team leader Brent Lincoln says the dispensers will make it easier for dog owners to clean up after their pets and will ensure that Tauranga's parks and reserves stay clean and safe for everyone's continued enjoyment.

'We wanted to make it as easy as possible for our residents to show courtesy for their fellow community members by picking up after their dogs – after all, no one likes stepping in dog waste, whether it's on a sports field or footpath.

'Picking up after your dog also means you're doing the right thing by the environment. When dog droppings are left outdoors and it rains, harmful bacteria from the droppings can be washed down the drains and end up in local waterways.”

So far 20 dispensers have been installed around the city and Brent states that the feedback from the general public has been positive so far, with community members telling Animal Services that they are pleased with the dispensers.

'Our Animal Services team has had some great comments from park users about the dispensers. People are really pleased that we're making it simple and convenient for dog owners to do the right thing.” Brent says.

People who are caught not cleaning up after their dogs run the risk of getting a $300 fine.

Excellent, can we have the same at Moore Park Katikati.

Why, and why double up on posts?

The responsible dog own finds it easy to crap a plastic zip or shopping bag as they head out the door to take their dog walking. I can see $600 a dispenser? I will assume the cost comes out of the dog registration income to help valid the fee. Was it too difficult to attach the dispenser and sign to an existing bin to reduce posts and costs?

Great

Great move from Council. Only Murray Guy would try and invent some negativity around this. No wonder he was booted out last time around!

Being a responsible dog owner and taking my own bags with me - everywhere, I was happy to see these dispensers pop up at The Lakes this morning. I already had two bags in my pocket, but decided to take two out of the dispenser to see what they were like. They are a great size and with a "Mitten" type grab end, makes it really easy to pick up and dispatch the doggy poo. I won't use them again, as I take my own bags but thought it was a great idea. I hope the costs were taken out of the dog registration fees that we responsible dog owners pay.

brilliant

Not something I'd like to relt on. But I think most dog owners have been caught short sometime.

I just wanted to say that I think this is great that the council have been proactive about keeping parks clean. I holiday in Whitianga and they have these bag dispensers there. They are great as sometimes even when you remember to take a bag, you may need an extra one!! please can they be put along the Papamoa reserve walkways.

Yes, it seems ok for Murray's council to have put all those $$$ into Baypark and even a Speedway business, but this small project on controlling dog doo gets nitpicked. Of course I think Murray will run again, maybe at the Mount Papamoa ward for which he showed great affinity at the byelection?
