It seems nothing out of the ordinary, it doesn't set him apart from other people doing a similar job and it's probably understandable.
Tauranga deputy mayor Kelvin Clout is up for a 13.6 per cent pay rise - which will lift his remuneration by $10,213 to $85,139.
Deputy mayor Kelvin Clout is set to get a pay rise following the latest round of pay increase announced by Tauranga City Council.
'Yes, 13 per cent may sound horrific in this day and age,” says Phill Van Syp of 1st Call Recruitment.
'But if he has historically been underpaid for his level of seniority, responsibility and workload, then it will be deserved.
'We expect people in positions of responsibility to be adequately remunerated.”
Kelvin's rise was far and away the biggest raise in the latest round of pay increases announced by the council.
The Mayor will get a 1.5 per cent increase (up $2214 to nearly $150,000), committee chairs are up 0.6 per cent or $455 to $72,368 and ordinary councillors are up 1.5 per cent or $1049 to $70,949.
Kelvin's standout increase will 'take his margin back to where it used to be”, according to Mayor Stuart Crosby. And it will recognise the difference between the workload of a general councillor and the deputy mayor.
Kelvin's new recommended wage pay packet of $85,139 is in line with his counterpart in Hamilton.
That's a bigger city in which the deputy mayor Gordon Chesterman has a recommended wage packet of $88,051.
The Mayor Julie Hardaker has a recommended wage packet of $156,412 – $6598 more than Stuart Crosby. The Hamilton salary packages are being ratified today.

Clout's snout

Did he not know what the salary was when he did his application and campaigning? What a disgrace. I know of people that have had no pay rise in 8 years. The snout of Clout is in the trough. If you don't think you get enough, leave and let someone else do it.
Why Do
Posted on 28-04-2016 13:05 | By Merlin
Why do local and central government and corporate executives get bigger pay increases than most other people who get a measly 1 to 2 %.That is why the rich get richer and the gap between keeps getting even greater.

for some. It's the first 1.5% increase mentioned after Kelvin's that gets up my nose... Maybe we should demand a time and motion chart for the lot of them?

It is one thing to say it is "adequate", but can anyone tell us just exactly what he does to earn it ?
Horrific

If he was employed in the real world his employer decides if he is worthy, or not, of such a rise, but he is "working" in local government and we ratepayers are his employers, and I doubt many of us think he deserves a rise. Shame on you Mr Clout.

Nothing nice to read and fair enough to, bring on the election, time for another clean out.
Clout the Crosby Clone

Mr Clout seems simply like a clone of Mayor Crosby to me. What about promises of low rates rises? Oh, yes, call is a stormwater levy and think we ratepayers don't notice???
Completely within reason

$85k for a job of such seniority is minimal. You have branch staff at a bank earning more money than that. A city of 125000 plus - this role is a big responsibility. Pay peanuts and you get monkeys... Councillors work very long hours and all they get is keyboard warriors criticising them for trying to do their bit to better the city. I think the role should be $120k minimum, even that doesn't fully compensate for the work required and the responsibilities undertaken. The amount of people that feel "entitled" to abuse elected members is akin to bullying. Read the articles carefully, Cr Clout did not request nor propose this pay rise.

When first elected both Clout and McIntosh spouted on about costs and opening the books.Nothing more happened.Because their rhetoric was just that and now the system has sanitised them. The staff run the place because the councillors cant
I don't mind...

The figure doesn't sound unreasonable to me. I think it's important that we do remunerate key positions well, in an effort to try and attract better talent at election time. I would be quite happy to pay the Mayor half a million even if it meant that they did an outstanding job. It's peanuts on a per capita basis and good counsellors should be able to save the taxpayer far more than their what their salary costs. Trouble is, will that be enough to attract the quality applicants we need?

The positions you mention have responsibility. This deputy mayor lark has no real responsibility. When was the last time a councillor was fired for making a bad decision? When voted in, they are sure of at least three years pay, no matter what their performance. On the other hand, people in the real world are dismissed regularly.

What a load of cobblers that is. An $85,000 salary is a huge amount for what is a part time job of around 10-15 hours a week and nothing to do for 8-10 weeks at Xmas. The amount is an absolute insult to ratepayers and reflects an utter arrogance. Likewise the mayor and Councilor salaries. Just because they are there 24/7 keeping a seat warm does not mean that is what the job is worth based on the hours napping. The real job can be done in a few hours a week, if the place was properly run and managed competently. There in rests the problem, the officials want them there 24/7 so as they can create paper, meetings, discussions endlessly so as they have something to do (no use or value to ratepayers) and they can multiply.

Sorry mate, there is absolutely no responsibility at all for the Mayor, Councillors and senior staff at all, the Local Government Act provides total immunity for all for anything they do. No one is liable, responsible or likely to be sued for anything ever. So no, all that is happening here is that the payment is a "seat warming payment" nothing more.
Now here's a thought

Hows about the government pass a law that gives ALL workers in a business the same pay rise as those at the top receive? Hang on, I think I just saw a pig fly past.
