Country on show in Katikati

Alpaca, cattle, horses, sheep, tractors and machinery, home baking and preserves – all sorts of country fun for everyone will be bursting out of Uretara Domain at Katikati's A&P Show tomorrow.

Plus, wood-chopping is returning – and joins the many traditional agricultural and pastoral events coupled with modern attractions – offering entertainment for young and old.

Katikati A&P Show president Louellen Davies says the equestrian competitions are very popular and this year children as young as four-and-a-half will compete in the lead rein section.

'The Katikati show is a Horse of The Year qualifying show; so we have additional sections for first-year ridden ponies, saddle hunter ponies, riding horses and saddle hunters.

'The sheep event racing is a must to watch; those sheep are quick off the mark and certainly make you smile.”

And children will be spoilt for choice with Bumper Balls, Frozen Theatre, side shows and merry-go-rounds, while adults can enjoy a variety of trade shows.

Cattle competitions will include dairy as well as beef, and children will show off their calf club calves.

Plus, the hugely popular cow milking contest is back. 'There's no machine, just you and your hands. It's a great event,” says Louellen.

The traditional home industries section is enjoying a revival now people are getting back to basics and growing their own fruit and vegetable – and the baking competitions are hot again too.

And the photographic competition has entries displayed in the home industries hall.

'And this year, with sponsorship from Avanza, the wood chopping will take place in the form of ongoing match race demonstrations throughout the day, organised by Val Baker from The Katikati Axemen's Association.

'And children don't forget the lolly scramble in the pony ring at 12.30pm,” says Louellen.

'And last not least, there's always the bar underneath the old oak tree.”

Gates open 9am this Sunday, February 7, at Uretara Domain, Major St, Katikati.
