Update: Crash scene cleared

Update 12.52pm: Traffic is flowing again on State Highway 2 in the Karangahake Gorge, west of Waihi after a crash earlier today.

The Traffic Road Event Information System says the site where the incident happen has now been cleared and traffic congestion is now easing.

Earlier:

Emergency services are at the scene of a crash on State Highway 2 in the Karangahake Gorge west of Waihi.

The incident believed to have involved two vehicles happen about 10.14am this morning about 3km southeast of Te Moana. Police, Fire and St John Ambulance are at the scene.

A witness told SunLive it looked like the two vehicles had been involved in a head on. The woman who didn't want to be identified says traffic is backed up in both directions and it looked like two ambulances had taken some patients to hospital.

At this stage it is unclear how many people are injured or involved in the crash or how serious the injuries are.

More details as they come to hand.

It looks like they could have let the traffic trickle through that big gap if they went slow enough, and not turned them around
