Community input on Civic Centre

The Civic Heart community engagement planned for Greerton Village has been postponed until Monday.

The community event will take place from 11am to 1.30pm in the Village Green.

Tauranga City Council is seeking ideas for a new civic heart.

Tauranga City Council have set up a series of public meetings to gather ideas from the public about a civic precinct that contributes to an active, safe and vibrant city centre.

Councillors are asking the community for its input on creating Tauranga's 'civic heart” in the city centre, as part of Council's Civic Space Options project.

It's a once in a lifetime opportunity for the city, says Mayor Stuart Crosby.

'Council is in the unique position of requiring a long-term site for our offices, at the same time as owning the largest central city site.

'Council's Civic Space Options Project is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the public and private sector to work together to create a world-class civic heart in Tauranga – one of New Zealand's fastest growing cities.”

To achieve this, Stuart says council will bring fresh thinking to planning ahead for the future 10, 20, 30 years to enhance the desirability, vibrancy and economic sustainability for the city and community.

'What we all decide will represent a significant investment in the long-term future of our city, so it's important that we get this right.”

The Civic Space Options project will determine the best options for Council accommodation and assess how this project could be a catalyst for other opportunities in Tauranga's city centre. Have Your Say! See more at: http://www.tauranga.govt.nz/civicheart

Other dates in the programme of visiting markets and gaining ideas from the public about Tauranga City's new civic precinct remain the same so far.

They Are:

Papamoa Plaza Thursday, January 28 at 9am to 5pm

Bethlehem Town Centre Thursday, February 4 at 10am to 3pm

Little Big Market Mount Saturday, February 6 at 9am to 1pm

I understand from a councillor the tcc building is going to be demolished and baycourt is going to be a mueseum, believe it has been signed off

So......

We still have our sites set on Council being housed in the centre of the city, where access and parking are a major issue and they are now capable of conducting council business from anywhere at any time, thanks to $900,000 worth of new computer technology. Why not move Council to open space on the outskirts of our expanding city (Maybe Tauriko) and let investors build a hotel and shopping complex. Maybe a visit to the brand new development in Massey, Auckland (Westgate) would inspire our "whoa is me" retailers.

I walk past the Council everyday, and each time the reception/front area is filled with people coming in for some form of business or another. I'd say that even if the Council set up all of its services online, someone would still raise all hell because they have to drive across town to do something that they could have done online.

Smoke Screen

I think all these meetings and calls for public input are a smoke screen to look as though they are genuinely interested in our views. Have they ever been interested in what we think - and have they ever taken our views into account? No doubt the plans have already been drawn up and contracts signed and sealed!

agree with smoke screen

to conclusions why don't you take the time to go along to one of these meetings and have your say. If you don't do that you will have absolutely no reason to complain.

They have been having secret meetings with the city's so called and self appointed elitist. Their plans are obvious, and for that mater exceeding dubious. These secret meetings are about for example: - a mega cost museum to house the junk that is in storage at present and should really reside at the tip. they want the city to build a large hotel also. All of this will cost tens or millions ion new and extra city/ratepayer debt. These dreams are simply those of people who are not prepared to dip in their own pocket but into the public coffers to pay. That is all so wrong. I still can not see any downside in Town Hall relocating to the ex Trust Power building. There are just no downsides to it at all.

Of course, but as many have said this has already been decided, they are just going though the apparent motions of consulting with the public, after that phase they will go and do what has already been decided last year.

How about some specific facts instead of innuendo and insinuations??? If councillors don't consult they are damned and if they do consult they are damned too. There seem to be a lot of ignoranuses commenting and making accusations but no actual facts.

Ah Sorry BUT

most of those that have commented have hit at least a few nails on the head. My insiders tell me: First, the current building IS TO BE DEMOLISHED ! SECOND, a new council building will be built on the same spot - $$$$$$ MILLIONS. And yes ALL THAT IS NEEDED in the town centre (yes town centre) is a public enquiry counter. There is NO reason whatsoever to have all of building compliance mob, and 90% of the other council staff functions, (that never deal with the day to day ratepayers, in the MIDDLE of the town. ALL NON-DAY to DAY rate payer activities should be located WELL OUT of the town centre where parking is NOT a problem. (OH, yes 90% of the council staff will object - we are now in the "sticks" !! Get real, you work for the RATEPAYERS. Don't like it QUIT

OH, and on my last post

I forgot to say, that my sources tell me that that the council ALREADY has concept design drawing for a new building on the same spot - 6 stories high .............

I suppose you really did want to use the word ignoranuses lol.....but I went to an public input meeting re the Greerton lights and BEFORE the meeting started a Councillor told me that it was already a done deal.....He then retracted that statement.....come on....I believe he was right in the first instance....they have plans and have to BE SEEN TO BE CONSULTING with the peasants.

Planning ahead

Which past councilors and even this current have no future proofing in mind

My point is that if people are going to make claims and cast aspersions they should present the facts and name the councillors who supposedly said this or that. It's important to get things right otherwise people could just make things up for effect. Have you ever noticed that some people exaggerate a lot, then when questioned the story isn't exactly the same? Both councillors and commenters should be open to all suggestions being received then evaluated on their merits. Some commenters seem as guilty of made up minds as the council they criticise. I'm actually quite cynical about council too but I'm prepared to see the whole deal then either support it or reject it. Personally I don't believe anything on the civic centre is a done deal or signed off but I look forward to Chrissie13 providing any evidence to the contrary if it actually exists.

City Councillors lies

Posted on 13-02-2016 15:03 | By Cydifor

How interesting that Colleen Spiro was told by a councillor BEFORE the meeting late last year in Greerton about the traffic lights they are yearning to put it in. I know that 99% of people at that meeting said NO to the lights. So was that meeting just a farce to quieten down the good folk of Greerton? $500,000 to be spent on a pain-in-the-....!
