Aritists spruce up Tauranga

Local artists Tara Fowler and Millie Newitt know all about brightening up the place.

The pair are creating another mural to grace the city centre this weekend as part of a project commissioned by Mainstreet Tauranga in collaboration with Broncos Outdoors and Guthrie Bowron Tauranga.

The mural, on the side of the privately owned Broncos Outdoors wall on Willow Street, depicts a forest scene with a winged woman, representing cupid, shooting a heart shaped bow towards a hanging seat.

Members of the public will be able to sit on the seat and be photographed in the interactive scene.

Mainstreet Tauranga spokesperson Sally Cooke says the mural is the latest love note for Downtown Tauranga.

'Creating love notes in the city centre that are interactive, that give pleasure and enjoyment to passers-by and that enrich and revitalise the street scenes is just one of the things we do. The artists creating this mural are the same who created the wings mural on the Strand.

'Millie and Tara are amazing to work with. Their creativity and talent is evident and they pour so much passion into what they do that we feel privileged to be able to provide another space for them to express their talents for the benefit of the city centre.”

Glenn Tuck from Broncos Outdoors says they were eager to partner with Mainstreet Tauranga on the project to add to the vibrancy of the city centre.

'As a long-standing business in Downtown Tauranga we have a vested interest in the revitalisation of the city centre. There are many ways this will be achieved and this mural is just a small part of the puzzle but a fantastic one to be involved in. It's very cool watching it come to life.

'Millie and Tara have only just started it and already it looks amazing. I'm sure it will provide enjoyment for many.”

The paints have been generously donated by Guthrie Bowron Tauranga and Franchisee Shelley Varnam says when Mainstreet Tauranga came to them with the idea for the project they jumped at the chance.

'We especially wanted to support it as it was a city centre project. Also we were immensely impressed with the calibre of the artists, Millie and Tara, so it meant we were also supporting emerging talent. They've been great to work with and its exciting seeing the mural come to life.”

The artists started working the project on Friday evening and, weather permitting, hope to complete the mural over the next week.

The Truth

The truth is Glenn Tuck of Broncos Outdoors is the Chairman of the Tauranga Mainstreet board and one would hope that Broncos are bearing the costs of this exercise or will Mainstreet once again conceal the cost and take it from the members funds?

Thank you Tauranga Mainstreet and Broncos Outdoors for gifting us this wonderful 'love note' for our city. I cannot believe that such negativity in terms of these comments can be inspired by such a generous gesture! I can only assume such bitter people would complain about any and every hint of progress for Tauranga.
