The Jellybean Gymkhana at Te Puna saw about 20 riders aged from 18-months to 12-years take up the reins in a unique event for children.

Otumoetai/Te Puna Pony Club head coach Kirsten Symes says there's not a lot of other events out there for small riders and people new to riding.

'Last year we did this for the first time as we wanted to offer something for the young people that was fun.”

Today's participants ranged in age from 18-months to 12-years-old.

'Riders are competing in events such as best trick, best tail, best steering, Simon says.”

Kirsten says the first class was called ‘pimp your ride' and saw children dressing up their horses in different colour schemes and putting things in the reins – stick on labels, glitter and paint.

'It was lots of fun. A lot of our riders who are too advanced to take part in the event have been helping lead the horses.

'The event was open to anyone who wanted to come.”

Kirsten says the event is designed for children who are starting out in riding and don't go to the other shows or serious competitions.

'This is for an introduction to competitions. We will probably do it again next year.”
