Final four flag designs revealed

The four alternative flag designs for inclusion in the New Zealand flag referendum later this year have been revealed.

The designs were unveiled at a media conference in Wellington this morning and will go forward into the first referendum, which begins in November.

All Kiwis registered to vote are being asked to take part, and will be asked to rank the four flag alternatives selected by the panel.

Referendum one runs from November 20 to December 11, and rather than picking one favourite design, voters will be asked to rank the four options from most preferred to least preferred.

The four designs are:

Silver Fern (Black & White), designed by Alofi Kanter from Auckland.

Silver Fern (Red, White and Blue), designed by Kyle Lockwood, originally from Wellington.

Koru, designed by Andrew Fyfe from Wellington.

Silver Fern (Black, White and Blue), also designed by Kyle Lockwood.

The preferred alternative design will then go up against the current flag in a second referendum between March 3 and March 24, 2016.

Following this process, the design with the most votes will then be named the official flag of New Zealand.

Flag Consideration Panel chair, Professor John Burrows, said: "'Interestingly, reviewing the flag designs long listed in detail and in real-life contexts helped shape the panel's decision making.

"For example, there are practical matters such as how they look from a long distance, how they look from both sides, when flying (or still), in situations where they may hang vertically, and so on."

To check you eligibility to vote, you can check or update your details on the elections website here, or call: 0800 36 76 56.

The process is a postal referendum, and all voting papers will be sent out in the mail.

Be Positive

Posted on 01-09-2015 12:05 | By Ron

Given that these are the choices which one is the best? My decision is influenced by what the flag looks like furled on a windless day. Two of the designs will have a mainly white showing (the top left corner) and are dismissed from my consideration. That leaves a black and a red configuration of the two Kyle Lockwood designs. I think the black is more distinctive. It also has the advantage of having all the colours of our various traditions embodied in the design

I can't believe these are our choices! Why are, the people, shown all the entries, because the team that selected thes are just not aware of the world we live in. To start with, our most recognisable symble (the Kiwi)is not there. Our family was going to make an entry, but thought there were better qualified designers our there. And there probably are, but the "Team" culled them out! THE DON

Now we will see

Posted on 01-09-2015 12:36 | By Merlin

Now we will see John Key flogging his favorite in a photo opportunity on a daily basis hoping he will not be embarrassed of wasting $26 million dollars of taxpayers money that should have been used on our people not his vanity.

5th option

Posted on 01-09-2015 12:56 | By Conzar

Why can't we vote for the original NZ flag?

OMG

This is laughable. They look crap!!!

Flag it

Posted on 01-09-2015 13:09 | By Ross01

I"M a KIWI which is what most NZers are known as around the world, If we must have a new flag as a John Key memorial let's have a kiwi on it.I assume John Key is one too, Maybe it would be more appropriate to have a Don key on it

Where's the Silver Fern

Where's the Silver Fern those designs have white ferns???

throw the lot out and have a jug of beer and a rugby ball on piece of cloth if this is what we get for 26 mil

a white feather ?

Posted on 01-09-2015 14:56 | By dstewart

Just give up and fly a white feather? How will our Royal Naval Servicemen enjoy flying the black Jolly Roger with a white feather? Who will ever take us seriously again as a trading country!

ISIS

Posted on 01-09-2015 15:04 | By maildrop

Are taking legal action if the black swirly mess wins. Some of the designers seem to forget it's a flag, not a piece of paper on a desk. Imagine that black mess half limp and flapping about in a breeze. What were they thinking? The fact it has made it into the vote says everything. Joke.

How much did the panel cost for this ridiculis exercises

Posted on 01-09-2015 15:22 | By Merlin

Will the Government please advise what the costs where for the panel to come up with 4 options.I bet they won't.Official information request perhaps.

What, NO kiwi flag, oh well then I will vote for the status quo.

Choices

Posted on 01-09-2015 16:42 | By Bay Citizen

I'm glad the bottom left one is in. That is probably my favourite. The top left and bottom right don't work at all for me because they have too much white, including round much of the edges, which will make the outline disappear in many contexts. I'm still going to vote for the status quo though.

About time...

Posted on 01-09-2015 18:34 | By Number eight

We get a new flag, for the one on the bottom left hand side does it for me.For all those people who are clinging to the past, the ones who want to keep our outdated flag, its time to move on,and before we hear the same old, old, old stories about how our serviceman and women died fighting for the flag...i thought they were fighting for NEW ZEALAND AND FREEDOM,not a flag. This flag for me still honours our colonial past with the red, white and blue, but with the fern and the southern cross you know at a glance that this is NEW ZEALAND'S flag and for me i say...ABOUT TIME

Will the Government Supporters

Posted on 01-09-2015 18:47 | By Merlin

Will the government supporters vote for a change to appease their leaders vanity program or will they do a conscience vote of what they really think I wonder.

No Surprises Here

Posted on 01-09-2015 20:24 | By Jitter

I am not impressed. What can we expect when you have designs chosen by a committee. The silver fern has puzzled me since I was at school. There are no silver ferns in NZ. There are green ferns with silver undersides. So why aren't the ferns in these designs green ? No matter what you do with a silver/white fern it still looks like a white feather. So what do these designs with the silver/white fern say to the world. We are all cowards and we are prepared to display our underbelly to the world in surrender ! I'm sorry but having seen this crap I shall vote for the status quo until a really impressive and representative design is produced.

PIGS MIGHT FLY TOO

Posted on 01-09-2015 20:40 | By ROCCO

So the Flag Panel bozos seem to think $6.7m for flag consultation (their wages)and $16.7m plus for the postal poll is okay. While I don't really give a ratz artz about a new flag as the existing flag is just fine but if other KIKIS want a new flag so be it. However what appals me most about the whole circus is the lack of due process and how one man on a personal whim can drive this thing when we did not need to spend $24m plus as it could have been better consulted on at far less cost and the referendum cost would have been virtually zilch had we run it in conjunction with the 2016 Local Body Elections and made it part of those voting forms.I notice mumbling bumbling John Boy is looking a bit haggard and ragged these days looks like he can't hack the pace.

Flag choice

Posted on 01-09-2015 22:20 | By Theodorus

If we do decide to change flags I like the bottom left one best as it is the most colourfull and pleasant to view one and should represent us really well! By Theodorus.

Add a fern

Posted on 01-09-2015 22:49 | By Ellajj

Just add a fern in the space under the Union Jack on the existing flag. Pleases everyone and means it's easy to change existing flags.

Returned Servicemen

Posted on 02-09-2015 08:10 | By sheild

Number 8 ts time to move on,and before we hear the same old, old, old stories about how our serviceman and women died fighting for the flag. My father fought for our country as thousands of others did, his casket was draped with this flag as respect of his service and others like him, You show disrespect for all in your comment. You would not hear a person from USA or Australia talk like that!

Conzar

Posted on 02-09-2015 11:42 | By Reefer

if you'd been paying attention, you'd know that we will get a chance to vote for the existing flag. it will be pitched against whichever of the current crop wins. Focus, man.

SILVER FERN?

Posted on 02-09-2015 12:36 | By Fun in the Sun

all this talk about the silver fern, but all we get is a white feather. I go for the blue and black design but change the white feather to a silver fern.

Fun in the Sun

Posted on 02-09-2015 22:56 | By Ellajj

White feather? We all know what that means although all these commenters who want to ignore the Union Jack and history probably want to ignore the history of the meaning of the white feather too.

Who pays

Posted on 04-09-2015 13:21 | By Feruno

for our new drivers licenses and PASSPORTS ?? I do not want a new flag and I am NOT going to pay for ANYTHING because the flag was changed by someone who has nothing better to do .They MUST tell us why it needs to be CHANGED...

Feruno

Posted on 05-09-2015 02:40 | By Kenworthlogger

Who says we need new passports or licenses? The old ones will still work no matter what flag we have.

ADD A TROUGH!

Posted on 05-09-2015 20:20 | By crazyhorse

The flag should have a brown trough running through the middle with a koru in each corner and a curly tail sticking out of the middle of each koru. This truly represents New Zealand!.

kenwortblogger

Posted on 06-09-2015 09:26 | By Feruno

So when I next travel internationally, and I try to enter the country who have a new flag notice from NZ, and they say my passport is invalid because it is inaccurate, I can say this blogger bloke says its ok and each country will say, yes, that's ok, kenworth blogger makes the rules for all countries

Vote the koru!

Posted on 06-09-2015 09:58 | By simple.really

26 million is only the tip of the iceburg, as the Government as now acknowledged. Going to be a very expensive exercise if it comes to fruition. Vote the ugliest flag - the koru. Hopefully it comes to the koru vs the current flag, and commonsense prevails.

jmac

Posted on 06-09-2015 11:51 | By JohnMac

The old flag is not great but the new aren't any better so stay with what we have until someone gives us a good reason to change. At the moment we only have conspiracy theories, a trick to get TPPA passed, a first move to be a republic (probably close to the truth, fear we will lose our constitution and the treaty and anybodies guess what else. This is a poorly thought out and expensive plan for a change which most people had not even thought about until JK had a whim to change the flag without giving a concrete reason why.

Feruno

Posted on 06-09-2015 16:15 | By Bop man

I guess you don't have a current passport anyway so no worries there as the passport does not have the flag o it anywhere, just checked as for the licence I guess these will just simply phase in as required....

Feruno

Posted on 06-09-2015 17:15 | By Kenworthlogger

Your comments are hilarious. Your passport is valid now and whether or not the country changes flags or heads of state or prime minister or anything it stays valid until the expiry date. Even if we change our flag other countries would not care. Just a tad of common sense would tell you that.

Simple really

Posted on 06-09-2015 17:17 | By Kenworthlogger

Yes i totally agree with your idea. I was going to do the same thing and vote fir the ugly koru one and then put that up againts our beautiful existing kiwi flag. Go the existing flag!!!!!

Vote NO for all 4

Posted on 06-09-2015 20:24 | By Ellajj

I like the theory of voting for the ugliest one.... Although in my opinion they are all awful. Just to be safe I'll be voting no against all 4.

OOPS

Posted on 07-09-2015 13:54 | By Feruno

I did not even check my passport ( its my second one ). I trusted my source and they were WRONG, or so it seems

Don't vote

Posted on 07-09-2015 18:50 | By astex

Taking part in the voting shows an interest in the procedure even if you vote no to all. If there is a low turnout (interest) John Key will be forced to cancel the second referrendum and have more egg on his face than on the toast.

HERE WE GO AGAIN

Posted on 08-09-2015 19:47 | By crazyhorse

I wonder what flag is flying over Kaitaia Airport, at the moment, non of these 4 or our present 1, couple of cops there laughing and chatting with the protesters, job done? turn up threaten government buckles, caves in, the Ngai Tahu negosiator Chis Finlayson turns up. ooops 1 more airport gone in the trough, that makes 2, wonder if Steve Chadwick is lining up Rotorua air port for ""change over"" Bruz can't have to many airports, stop all the tax payers from "escaping"!.

1835 anyone?

Posted on 08-09-2015 22:28 | By Darren

If the country really doesn't want the 1902 flag I'd prefer the 1835 flag to any of the recent alternatives. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_New_Zealand

iKnow....

Posted on 08-09-2015 23:11 | By Ellajj

Are you sure he will be forced to cancel the debate? I haven't heard about that. If by not voting the farce will be stopped then I am very happy not to vote!

Yes

Posted on 09-09-2015 14:05 | By Kenworthlogger

We need a nz law expert to advise us on how to best bury this one. Anyone know one??!

FIFTH OPTION

Posted on 11-09-2015 13:09 | By carpedeum

I agree with Conzar's thinking.... Now that there iss a selection - why could we not make THIS referendum have an alternative choice / space to vote for the original flag as well - should just about halve the total costs and get a result and then we can all MOVE ON to other things

Voting

Posted on 11-09-2015 16:32 | By margotaylor

You can't vote NO for all of them. They need to be ranked in your favourite order. I would like to be able to vote NO.

@Margo

Posted on 11-09-2015 23:19 | By Papamoaner

Easy Margo, I will be writing "NONE" across my voting form. It records an invalid vote. Hopefully, the second referendum will be such a dogs breakfast everyone will vote for the status quo. My own favoured flag is the original, with the stars replaced by a black KIWI. The latest flag being pushed, is a bloody ice cream logo. It is so tasteless, they must surely be tongue in cheek - 20,000 invalid votes?

jmac

Posted on 15-09-2015 13:02 | By JohnMac

Pretty well sick of the whole waste of time debate. Wait for the second high cost vote and go for no change. Maybe the PM will admit he was wrong when it all tips over and pay for this mess out of his rather large bank account. Yeah right

You cannot trust people who won't abide by the rules

Posted on 15-09-2015 21:02 | By ROCCO

Not only is the whole flag thing an obscene waste of taxpayers money but now wibble wobble man Key doesn't oppose the idea of usurping the whole consultation process that cost $ millions and adding in the Red Peak flag which is not even original. Labour have it dead right in saying the first question must be do NZers want to change the flag at all.

Democracy in Action

Posted on 16-09-2015 13:34 | By Ron

At the last election 80% of people voted for parties which wanted to change the flag. Well they have their wish. Logically you want to know what the flag will change to so it makes sense to choose the alternative before deciding to ditch the original or not. Obviously people who think they wont get their way (presumably the 20% who did not vote for the main parties) are trying to scupper the process. For them democracy is only democracy if it agrees with their view.

WAY OFF BEAM HERE

Posted on 16-09-2015 20:43 | By kellbell

@ RON I don't recall any political party having changing the NZ flag in its party manifesto or even mentioning it at the 2014 elections. So keep reminding us who voted for it.

Who Pays??

Posted on 21-09-2015 09:50 | By flyingtoaster

If the flag is changed, Who is going to pay? All passports, drivers licences, firearms licences will have to be changed, and I am sure that the government won't foot the bill. Kind of like our "lifetime" drivers license, that we now have to pay to have renewed. Think of; Schools that have the NZ flag on their letterheads. Companies & Govt Depts, that have NZ flag on their stationery. Now think of overseas issues; Replacing all the NZ flags owned by every different government Websites with the NZ Flag. WHO Pays for all this? If the flag is NOT changed, the expense is the cost of two referendums, an expense that we have incurred, flag change or not.

referendum

Posted on 21-09-2015 15:41 | By Plonker

The $26 million cost is just the two referendums, the cost to replace flags, letterheads, cards, signage, websites and everything worldwide is likely to take the total cost to some $100 million. Just all totally ridiculous.

JUST TWEAK A FEW THINGS, 'SHE'LL BE RIGHT!!

Posted on 23-09-2015 23:03 | By HI :-)

We Still haven't got it right!! If those are the choices we have then we still need to tweak a few things like..use the top lft cnr flag, add sml blck kiwi to top lft cnr, add the 4 red and whte stars to the botm right black cnr after all when we represent our country "We are proud Kiwis in black n white"!!weather it it is a fern or piko piko or koru!! Let's get it right, $26 ml spent on what??!! at least be equal!! :-) and "She'll Be Right"!!

Red peak?

Disgraceful tinkering with Law

Posted on 24-09-2015 16:54 | By Papamoaner

It's so dangerous to tinker with law change by abusing parliamentary urgency. First it was rugby booze. Now it's the Red Pewk flag. If it ain't broke, why fix it? How must all those poor folk in broken houses in Chch feel when they see this huge wastage of money and resources? National have plummeted in my view. It edges on corruption to change laws to satisfy a vain whim.

tino rangatiratanga - remember this flag????

Posted on 28-09-2015 06:02 | By pakeha2

That is the only flag Nz should have as it depicts the flow and ebb of our country yet it is not even in the select four? absolutely disgraceful as it shows racism continues to exist from the top down towards our native people ! john key! I say get off personal grandstanding for your ego ! because you have done deals behind closed doors with those you have allowed to takeover our country - a truly weak excuse that international people mistake nz products for australian - so what! australia uses its kangaroo green and gold in export areas from what i saw when i was involved in the international markets - the cost of 26 mil is coming from where? what country is funding this john key?? you are accountable to me and the rest of nz who vote - not your wealthy foreign friends !!!

This flag is a maori flag, for maori, it's not a New Zealand flag, it has no significance for the other 85% of the population, well, you maybe?.
