A string of large outdoor lights fell across Wharf Street over the weekend, with council officials suggesting the masonry they were attached to was to blame.
The incident is believed to have happened early on Saturday morning, with Tauranga City Council suggesting the imported Italian lights crash-landed at around 3am before being cleared up.
The lights were photographed strewn across Wharf Street by a witness on Saturday morning. Photos: Supplied.
However, photos sent to SunLive from a passerby show the lighting still lying across the road in broad daylight.
A structural engineer assessed the safety of the street and ordered two additional strings of lights to be removed as a precaution, says TCC spokesperson.
'His preliminary assessment was that the building masonry was most likely at fault, not the installation or fixings,” they say. 'A full assessment is now underway.”
The assessment was made via the verandas above the footpath, where the remainder of fixtures and fittings were checked.
The witness who took the pictures says: 'It was a clear sunny day, no wind and, luckily, very early in the day when these lights fell to the ground.
'Any later and someone could have been killed. Imagine if this had happened on Sunday with lots of people in town at a council promoted event in Wharf Street.”
The ‘Eat Street' dining precinct in Wharf Street between The Strand and Willow Street was opened barely two weeks ago.
It is an initiative paid for largely by local businesses with the support of TCC, intended to attract more people into the city's central business district.

my "full assessment" is that the anchor points/fittings were not up to the load - who signed of the resource consent - heads should roll..........
What can one do.....

but laugh!!!, incompetence abounds, then there is the cost, but hey what the hell its not their money.
and so it goes .....

The stupidity of this council and their staff knows no bounds - they lurch from one disaster to the next, stripping branches off their money tree with gay abandon! How much did this 'balls up' cost the ratepayers after 'support from the council'. 'Support' not being the operative word in this case!
It's never

their money. They wouldn't be so free with it if they were picking up the whole tab.
Did the tcc follow own rules?
Posted on 01-09-2015 12:29 | By don archer
TCC has stringent rules for ratepayers to follow. Did they have an engineers report for this potentially public danger to be erected? Any tradesman could tell you that the stress the ends of that string of lights would e tremendous. THE DON
Council incompetance

is to blame AGAIN . They do not WORK for the money, so why should they care. They are more concerned with their own luxurious lifestyle, even to the point of vacating the council building and moving to the Westpac building's luxury suites while the "old building "remains empty . So what, let the ratepayer cough up some more . Ha Ha Ha
Eat Street....

Another 'eat street'? can they not come up with something else original as Rotorua have long had this name. How about 'feed street' or 'Kai road'?

Yeh, blame it on the Italians first off. Must be dodgy because they made them eh? Whoops, then you realise it's because some Kiwi couldn't fit them properly and some Kiwi signed it off. Can't wait to blame foreigners can you? Slap it on with No 8 wire you muppets.

Watching the first cable go up was comical. Electricians trying to be engineers. And yes DON, that photo is damning.

As the person who sent these photo's to the Sunlive, I also sent them to the TCC with some questions I'd like answered. It looks like they have just been Dyno bolted to the sides of the buildings. Are bolts and wire strops up to strength. Was it designed by a qualified engineer. Were they installed by qualified installers. Are we safe walking under the rest along the street. What damage was caused and what cost. What cost to clean up and fix this on the day. Somebody turned up to sort this on the day. Walking along the verandas above the footpath checking the rest of fixtures and fittings. No scaffolding, scissor lift or safety harness. Is this the normal Health and Safety Policy for their staff. Maybe The TCC will be forthcoming with some answers, though I rather think they will try to keep this quiet

Bowling alley. That place is very unattractive. Looks like a fishing port or wharf.

Just going through there now to see the carnage, was stuck behind a curtain-sider dropping off beer. Where are these vehicles supposed to park to offload their cargo now that their parking has been filled with trendy benches?

In reply to GreertonCynic, The answer of where to park the truck's was asked by one of the business's in Wharf St and the council answer was, just tell them to park in the middle of the rd and the car's will have to wait. That's a quote.

Am I glad none of you are on the council or else nothing would happen in this city apart from daily bitch sessions, So an anchor point failed I would presume that all the others would now have been checked. I am also sure an engineer would have signed off on this. As the saying goes Shit happens no one was injured. Lets learn from it and move on and enjoy this new area instead of just bitching about it.
small minded town folk

it has become very clear to me that people of this town have nothing better to do then moan about things that are not even that serious and as apposed to helping the situation to get it resolved just moan about rate payers this Tcc useless that what do half of you people do for this community probably nothing. So when this photo was taken what time was this?? and was the council called immediately to get the issue resolved? do any of you people actualy spend time in the cbd it doesnt thrive because people here dont care enough to get off there butts all they want to do is post comments on the internet like teenage girls grow up Tauranga residents

so applying your logic you are a pillar of society, and have spent the last 20 years on the church cake stall, this is an open forum so anyone can voice an opinion, when the Council can deliver a decent infrastructure which should be their prime focus, with a 30% reduction in staff I will rejoice, until then they get and deserve every bit of angst that comes their way, all we have here is more ineptitude, and a comment in the story.... it was the fault of the cladding, hell any self respecting "tradie" you thought would have checked the capabilities of it being able to cope before commencing the work, dumb and dumber and yet still dumber!!!!, ooops also I live in the CBD and can assure you I am not small minded.
Dynabolts

Looks like one of the dynabolts is still in the extended position and was not done up? Maybe this is why it failed. Simple error anyone can make.
Dynabolts
Posted on 03-09-2015 17:58 | By GreertonCynic
Should not have been used. Bolted through with a doubler plate would suffice, failing that chemical anchors. @Kenworthlogger - There should be enough redundancy in these anchor points that 75% of the bolts would support the cable. 50mm Dynabolts are simply not up to the task.

Greetoncynic who would have decided the method of fixing? Would that be up to the council or the contractor?
@kenny
Posted on 06-09-2015 16:22 | By Bop man
Would most likely by the overpaid engineer assigned to the project. Engineer plans it contractor does the work.

No need to fret over the lights falling down, the whole concept is a screw up. It is neither 'fish nor fowl' Wake up TCC !! Close off the street totally from 10 am each day - instruct the service providers that they have to deliver their supplies prior to the 10am cut off or they will be ticketed if found in the designated area after that time. This project is just another example of a fruitless attempt by a so called promotions agency to breathe life in to a corpse! Face it, the CBD is dying and if that eatery is the best you can come up with rigour mortis is well advanced !
Lights falling?
Posted on 08-09-2015 21:58 | By Silent Lambs
Sorry I thought it was lights out, you know, last one escaping out of the CBD turn it off. Perhaps they took it a bit to much to heart and forgot to let go, thinking no one left to notice?

Nothing smashed? Cant be good quality glass from Italy, must be cheap as plastic ones that bounce a lot better. So hate to see the big bills for all of this lot, starting with the consultants and raft of staff at TCC running around in endless circles seeking to look busy over this mess. Looks to be another disaster zone and that fits the TCC normal pattern of operation, there job is done, now onto the next street or the CBD, on the next seek and destroy mission. I guess the Willow street building is a mess, The Strand beach front is also, TCC are now seeking to link up these two disasters into one monumental monilith as part of the CBD encirclement, another cunning plan like Custer i presume.
What a shambles!

The more they think. the more they try to make it all "better" and the more money they spend the worse it gets. It is a paradox, and fully expected by almost but Council and the leech like appendages. What seems impossible is that they can self review and determine that the CBD implosion is only as a result of their meddling and nothing else.
