Police have reconstructed the teenager's movements before she was run over early in the morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Standen says the investigation is continuing and no arrests have been made yet.

Greg says Rangimaria had been affected by alcohol as she walked down Goring Street, Opotiki, with a friend at 3.45am.

She was ill on the road and unable to move so her friend had gone off to summon help.

Police knew those details with 'some confidence” as they were primarily provided in a statement by the friend who was there, he says.

A total of 12 people have been interviewed as police near the end of their investigation of possible leads.

Greg says there are still one or two matters to explore but the investigation has 'wound down somewhat”.

Considering the tragic circumstances around the death of the young woman, Greg says individuals drinking with people of Ranigmaria's age needed to consider whether they were looking after their mates by encouraging drinking at that age.

'These are the types of tragedies that can occur, which is incredibly sad,” he says.

People who have not yet spoken with police and may have information about the hit-and-run are asked to contact Whakatane Police on: 07 308 5255.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously Crimestoppers on: 0800 555 111.

What about parental responsibility?

It's difficult to make reasonable comments but at the same time show "respect" due to the tragedy of a needless death. But hard questions have to be asked and I just wonder why a 14 year old girl was out on the streets at that time? Lessons need to be learned if we are to stop this happening again. Does the term "affected by alcohol" mean that alcohol was the cause of being on the road unable to move? Let's hope the police get to the bottom of this and say it like it is too.

Condolences to the family... but hey, why was a 14 year old out that time of night, why was she 'under the influence of alcohol' and have 'friends' who cant even help/drag/roll a passed out person off of the road if they fall/collapse?? I think the parents, the friends... and also society in general need to answer a bunch of questions.... where do 14 year olds get grog? This whole situation is devastatingly wrong and I feel very sorry for whoever was unlucky enough to be the one to hit her.... they must be going thru hell themselves. The situation is very sad all round.
