Mt College wins national stage award

Mount Maunganui College has scooped two Stage Challenge 2015 National Awards of Excellence for its soundtrack and backstage crew.

The college's depiction of the real-life bloody and prolonged conflict over ownership of territory on the Crimean Peninsula earned the school third place in the Open Division of the regional competition at Auckland's Aotea Centre on June 26.

Since then, national production judge David Artis has viewed footage of schools that placed at every event throughout the country, focusing on concept, soundtrack and drama.

National Awards are judged by a different judge from the judging panel at the live events.

Mount Maunganui College's performance, ‘Stalemate', won The Edge National Award of Excellence for Soundtrack.

Event production judge Braydon Priest congratulated the school for staying away from the top 40 songs.

David described the performance's soundtrack as 'outrageously stunning”.

'[It was] a dramatic soundtrack adding to the perfectly timed performance,” he said

The college has also been named National Backstage Crew winners.

Stage Challenge stage manager Duane Inocencio says the college's pre-planning and hardwork really showed on the day.

'Their crew portfolio was very detailed,” he says. 'They thought of everything. Mount Maunganui scored top marks for teamwork and excelled at team structure and attitude.

'Their set movement was tight and the stage crew worked solidly throughout the eight-minute performance to make it come to life.”

The Ministry of Education National Award of Excellence for Concept was awarded to Horowhenua College, which placed first in the Palmerston North live event for their performance that covered the controversial topic of The Death Penalty.

The Ministry of Youth Development National Award of Excellence for Drama was awarded to Chilton St James School, which placed first in Wellington's live event for its presentation of ‘The Wake of Resistance'.

The Ministry of Youth Development National Award of Excellence for Student Leadership was awarded to Tawa College's Joshua Nightingale, who was nominated by fellow students for his dedication and contribution to their 2015 Stage Challenge performance.

With the success of the National Awards for 2015, organisers say it's likely that a national competition will be implemented in2016,with national judges announcing first, second and third in Open and Raw Divisions.
