Mildon backflips into record books

Kiwi rider Jed 'The Warrior” Mildon has becoming the first person ever to land a quadruple backflip on a BMX bike.

The Taupo-born rider and current Nitro Circus team member landed the amazing trick at Travis Pastrana's legendary ‘Pastranaland' complex in Maryland, North America, on May 2.

In order to complete four full rotations, Mildon rolled in 30.5 metres to launch off a 6.4m high takeoff ramp. He reached speeds in excess of 64 km/h and flew more than 15.2m in air.

'This is the pinnacle of my life,” says Mildon.

'Kinda like a story that you want growing up as a child but you don't know how it's going to pan out. It's unreal. To finally stomp the quad and reach my goal is unbelievable.

'It wouldn't have been possible without the support of my family, including my Nitro Circus mates.

'James Foster is such an incredible athlete and a great friend. He pushed me to challenge myself and test my limits.”

The 27-year-old rider attempted the quad more than 50 times, both at his home base in Tokoroa and Pastranaland, risking life and limb each time in his pursuit of the world record.

By successfully landing the quad, Mildon also brought an epic nine-month battle with fellow Nitro teammate James Foster to an end.

Mildon was the first person to ever complete a triple backflip on a BMX bike back in 2011, and the video on YouTube has been viewed more than 10 million views.

The challenge was filmed for US television network NBC's ‘Revolution Day: The Chase for the Biggest Trick in Action Sports History', which chronicled the nine-month journey of Foster and Mildon.

While Jed landed the flip on May 2, it has been kept a closely guarded secret until NBC aired the challenge over the weekend.
