Emergency services are at the scene of a fatal crash in the Waikato.

At about 3.07pm a car and truck collided on State Highway 1, about 3kms west of Cambridge.

Senior Sergeant Andrew Townsend of the Waikato District Command Centre says emergency services were called to the scene of the crash outside the Avaintidrome by the entrance to St Peters School about 3.05pm.

'Emergency services are still busy dealing with the situation at this time however initial information to hand suggests one person from the car was killed in the collision.

'At this stage the crash site is still very active with first responders working to map out the scene which will be examined by the Waikato Serious Crash Unit. With traffic flows as schools close expected to increase Police advise motorists to expect delays.”

Mr Townsend says diversions for northbound traffic are in place via Racecourse Rd and southbound traffic via Peake Rd.
