Mount tornado’s $2m cost

The insurance aftermath of the tornado which wreaked havoc on a strip of Mount Maunganui has been valued at more than $2 million.

Insurance Council of New Zealand has revealed figures on the extreme weather events that caused extensive flooding in Wellington and the Mount Maunganui tornado – totalling almost $20 million.

It comes as a result of the damage from the storm that lashed Wellington and the lower North Island between 13 and 15 May.

The tornado tore through Waitui Grove, Golf Road, Lodge Avenue, Ascot Place, Epsom Road, Maunganui Road, Owens Place and Baypark about 8.30pm on May 14 wreaking havoc on houses and commercial properties.

Fences, house roofs, trees, power transformers and trampolines were all destroyed, while Mount Maunganui Intermediate was closed the following day after sustaining considerable damage, including to its recently refurbished hockey turf.

Eleven houses were reported to have sustained damage and five commercial properties in Owens Place were damaged, along with the ASB Baypark which suffered extensive damage to cladding and signaget hat was torn from the structure.

Insurance Council chief executive Tim Grafton says more than $2m worth of insured damage occurred, consisting of $1.2m from commercial damage and almost $800,000 worth of domestic damage.

'House, contents and motor damage made up the balance of the damage. With events like this always possible, it just underlines the importance insurance plays when disaster strikes.”

Bay Leisure and Events chief executive Gary Dawson says the cost of the damage to Baypark remains unknown with Crawford Insurance still working through the aftermath.

The section of the stand remains off limits, and though all the damage has been cleared away rebuilding is yet to start.

'Our engineers doing some of the design work at the moment to rectify it,” says Gary.

A gerry built clip on roof thing so what would you expect . I would be very surprised if any insurer picked up the tab for this not fit for purpose structure.

Would you have the same point-of-view about all the other substantial properties that were damaged and were not "A gerry built clip on roof thing..."
