Stabbing accused behind bars

A man who sparked an armed police callout after allegedly stabbing two people will remain behind bars.

Rodney Lewis Gates, 43, was arrested on Saturday night following an altercation which saw the women injured and Gates allegedly point a firearm at police.

The Armed Offenders Squad was called to a Bethlehem address on Saturday night after after receiving reports of a domestic related incident involving a weapon.

Police say one person received a superficial stab wound to the abdomen and another had a superficial stab wound to their elbow. They were both treated at Tauranga Hospital before being discharged.

Gates was arrested and is now facing two counts of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, unlawful possession of a firearm, using a firearm against a law enforcement officer, and cultivating cannabis.

He is yet to enter a plea and has been remanded in custody until July 21.
