Beekeepers make smart move

The recent bee industry restructure into one body is a move in the right direction, says New Zealand First.

'It was great to hear that beekeepers have agreed on a structure for their industry that can only bring benefits to them and the New Zealand economy,” says Primary Industries spokesperson Richard Prosser.

'We congratulate New Zealand's apiarists on this outcome which will ultimately lead to a stronger voice for beekeepers. Their decision is timely given the threats of biosecurity incursions, pesticide use and Colony Collapse Disorder.

'A strong united voice is needed to protect the industry from government decisions that might affect its future, such as allowing honey to be imported, and benefit the promotion and sale of premium products to the world market.

'New Zealand First believes that a successful restructure of any part of our vital primary industry which benefits producers, consumers and the economy deserves support."
