Final chance to impress

Bay of Plenty's best and brightest rugby talent continue to jostle for a spot in this year's ITM Cup Steamers squad, this time at Katikati's Moore Park.

Tomorrow afternoon a Bay of Plenty Wasps side takes on the Counties Manukau Cavaliers at 3pm, following the curtain raiser between Katikati College 1st XV and Rotorua Boys' High School 3rd XV.

The majority of the Wasps team have come from the Steamers wider training group, consisting of contracted players and those that have been performing well throughout the Baywide club season.

On the back of good performances in last week's trial in Rotorua, Jone Lagibola, Jonah Bainavalu, Elijah Nicholas and Wade Pereira have also been rewarded with selection by Steamers head Coach Clayton McMillan and assistant coach Rodney Gibbs.

In addition, the Wasps fixture will be the first appearance for Shahn Eru and Terrence Hepetema, who are both now playing for Te Puna, having arrived recently from Italy and the United Kingdom. Whaka's Whaimotu Craft-Chemis will also make his first appearance returning from injury.

The trial does not include players involved in Investec Super 15 or the World Rugby U20 Championships.

Bay of Plenty Rugby Union chief executive Mike Rogers says it is fantastic to have Katikati hosting the annual fixture once again, the first time since 2012.

He admits the township doesn't get as much rugby as the likes of Tauranga sand Rotorua, given the infrastructure and population, but doesn't mean they aren't as important.

'As part of our strategic plan, unifying and inspiring the Bay of Plenty in all our communities, we are trying to use our shop window – the Steamers or in this case the Wasps – to connect with the community and provide that pathway for our younger players to see that top level and aspire to that level,” says Rogers.

'Katikati is a strong rugby town. We have hosted there before and the community always gets out and supports it.”

The Wasps versus Cavaliers match will be one of the last opportunities for players to put their hand up for the 2015 Steamers ITM Cup team.

The team will be named mid-July ahead of two ITM Cup pre-season matches against Auckland, July 31 in Whakatane, and Manawatu, August 6 in Tauranga.

Entry is $10 for adults, $5 for students and under-five's free.
