Late night police chase ends in arrest

A speedy dash from police has landed a Tauranga man in court this morning.

A police pursuit saw a vehicle chased through Waihi Road and Cambridge Road overnight before it was abandoned.

A Tauranga man will appear in court today on driving related charges.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the driver was located when police went into the search phase.

'Later in the search phase the vehicle was located parked in behind a service station,” explains Ian.

'The driver, a 20-year-old local man, was charged with driving related offences.

'He is facing charges of reckless driving, failing to stop and driving while disqualified.”

He was remanded in custody overnight and is due to appear in Tauranga District Court this morning.

A Waihi Road witness to the chase, who did not want to be named, described the pursuit as taking place at 'foot to the floor” speeds.

'They were going well over 100k,” he said.

'It was around 2am, and at that time of night, you couldn't miss it.”

Well done police. Why do these young guys think they can race around the streets with total disregard to anyone else's safety. End up killing someone and they don't realise they will have to live with that for the rest of their lives.

When this imbiclle goes to court all he will get is a slap on the hand. (sorry i forgot that could be assult) brushed with a wet paper bag given supervision(or will that infringe on his rights) and fined a palrty amount which will never be paid. Take the vehicle off them immediately and crush them, complete with everything still in and on them. And no insurance either

Should be an automatic CRUSH the car !regardless of who is the owner - if you value your car - don't lend your car to some low life (unless it can be shown that the car has been stolen and the driver has no connection to the owner).

Why crush it?

Why not auction it off so the govt can then get the fines paid which like you said dumbkof2 would never get paid off normally.

Is the key element with the Police response who really presented no differently to the offender. The speed incurred by both vehicles was obscene . Amazingly it never ended in a fatality. Just like any dispute someone has to be the bigger responsible person , so to engage in a chase such as this is mindless and on a parallel with the offender . Double standards in this country are law , and are applicable when suits. Look at the TV Ten 7 programme where offenders and Police flaunt with the basic seat belt law for example whilst in a Police car . Not defending the offender merely trying demonstrate equality with regard to responsible response. Fire and Ambulance don't have the same opportunity. Is it because they have some volunteers ? . Same law for all . Equally important services.
