Election expenses revealed

Bay of Plenty MP Todd Muller was backed by the National Party to the tune of $25,000 during his successful 2014 election campaign, while Tauranga MP and Transport Minister Simon Bridges relied on donations from the community.

The National Party support is the only donation listed on Todd's return of expenses and donations for the 2014 general election, while Simon's return shows developer Paul Adams' Carrus Corporation to be his biggest financial supporter.

Todd Muller's campaign car-wrap cost $2,585.

Simon declared two donations from Adams of $11,500 and $8,500.

He also received donations from Dean Waddell ($5000), Sikh community leader Puran Singh ($3,900), Eves Real Estate director Richard Cashmore ($3000), J Swap Ltd ($3000) and Sunny Hort Management director Narider Singh Hayre ($2,500).

Todd Muller's return shows he spent $19,500 of the aforementioned $25,000 on the campaign. Simon Bridges' return also shows he received more money than he spent, with $37,400 coming in compared with claimed expenses of $19,200.

Todd spent $5,499 on newspaper advertising, split between the local daily and various community papers about the electorate.

He also spent around $2000 on radio advertising. Another big expense was $2,585 on a car-wrap hoarding as well as $1,737 on printing flyers and $1200 on hoardings.

Simon spent about $5000 on newspaper advertising and $1,000 on radio advertising. He also spent $6,600 on a direct mail out to 27,000 homes.

NZ First candidate Clayton Mitchell didn't receive any donations over $1,500 except from himself, and spent $11,532. He advertised on radio and TV, totalling $3,338.

Only donations over $1,500 have to be declared to the Electoral Commission.

This buying candidates happens all over the world. Chinese business men buy our politicians, as do others.

Capitalism

Politicians are bought and sold just like everything in this insane system. Government policy will continue to be designed by the money backers for the money backers. The general good of the public is an afterthought.

Nothing to do with bribery and corruption

It is ridiculous to think that donors are "buying" candidates -and just reflects a "sore loser" attitude of those making the comments. Donors support candidates who most reflect their views. They don't change the views of the candidates! The alternative is to have no publicity so tnat voters do not know who top vote for. Or to only have rich people standing for election.Or is it that these people want to able to trough from the taxpayer because they cant find supporters willing to put their hands in their own pockets?
