Murder accused pleads not guilty

The man accused of murdering Ilya Olegovich Kojevnikov earlier this month in an alleged hit-and-run incident in Welcome Bay has pleaded not guilty.

Raymond Green, 32, was arrested following a short police investigation into the death of the Russian national on Monday, February 2.

In Tauranga High Court this morning, Justice Brewer set a trial date for September 28, 2015. A call over hearing of April 22 has also been set.

Ilya was killed after being hit by a black Subaru on Welcome Bay Road, near James Cook Drive.

Green was arrested the following morning after police found a black Subaru at a Papamoa address.

The same vehicle is believed to have been used in the fatal incident.

In court today, Justice Brewer entered not guilty pleas on the murder charge and the associated charges, which have been suppressed.

Defence lawyer Tony Rickard-Simms asked for no plea on the associated charges.

Justice Brewer entered not guilty pleas on behalf of Green stating that Tony did not have instructions on the charges and the pleas could be changed at a later date.

Green was remanded in custody until the call over hearing in April.

A bail application hearing is also scheduled for February 26, but this may be adjourned if the probation report is not ready in time.

At the time of the incident, a caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline said six police cars were seen at a Papamoa address on the Monday evening.

'I didn't know what was going on,” they said. 'I just saw all the police cars. I kept my children home from school just because I didn't know what was happening.

'I saw them towing the car away and police told us it was in connection to the hit-and-run.”
