Council flip flops on fence

Mount Maunganui's controversial jandal fence is here to stay with Tauranga City Council bowing to public pressure – for the summer at least.

The collection of Kiwi's trusty footwear made yet another re-appearance during the long weekend despite a number of public complaints at the camp ground and the main TCC office that saw officials remove it earlier this month.

Yesterday about 765 jandals could be seen along the fence line with red cable ties attaching each 'lost sole” to the fence.

The pop-up fence is near the stone steps on the southern side of Mauao, and is in its third showing in two summers.

However, each time council has stopped it in its tracks, with Mauao park ranger Mark Ray having to pull it down.

Council's environmental services manager Rebecca Perrett says due to public feedback, the decision has been made to keep the latest version of fence.

She adds it will be kept until the end of summer.

The decision follows widespread public debate earlier this month with many people eager to see the fence reinstated.

'It adds character to the Mount. We are a beach town. How can it be offensive?” and 'What better place for a jandal fence than at the beach and such a Kiwi icon” were just some of the comments made on SunLive's Facebook page earlier this month.

SunLive also ran a poll on the issue, with the public's viewpoint heavily in favour of the fence.

The poll, asking readers ‘Should the jandal fence be reinstated at Mount Maunganui' saw 773 people, or 72 per cent, voting in favour and 299, or 28 per cent, happy to see it gone.

Over the last two years the summer-inspired fence has taken shape with worn jandals of all colours and sizes adorning the fence that thousands walk past.

TCC's Mauao park ranger Mark Ray previously told SunLive he wasn't concerned whether the fence remained or had to go.

Time For Officials To Become Lord Nelson

Sometimes officials need to be like Lord Nelson and put their telescope to their blind eye. The jandals were adding colour and as usual there will be people who object. perhaps the saying fools rush in ...... is appropiate.

A childish idea? Yes, inasmuch as it is really quite colourful and imaginative, and kids are pretty good at that. Well done TCC, for listening, and Weekend Sun for quantifying the issue. It makes me smile when I see it, and apparently it does the same for many other people. "Those without a sense of humour are at the mercy of the rest of us."

Why do we need this? Looks like a form of graffiti to me. The Mount is so beautiful, why spoil it with all this junk!

If al we have to complain about is jandals that have been stuck onto a fence. As I have said before first world problem isn't it. Council should waste no more time on this bigger problems out there.

There is absolutely no doubt about it. Some people would moan if their rear end was on fire.
