Police chase following shooting

A man is in custody after a shooting incident in Karangahape Rd. At 8.45pm on Sunday police responded to a call reporting people fighting and gun shots fired in a side street off Karangahape Rd, Auckland.

Police say the caller reported the person with the gun had left in a car. A police patrol responding to the incident spotted the car leaving the scene and tried to stop it.

"The fleeing car rammed the police car and was chased by police onto the Northbound lanes of the Harbour Bridge.

"Near the top of the bridge the car crashed, and the occupant fled on foot on the bridge."

Police say he was chased and arrested by police officers.

Initially it was thought that there may have been more than one occupant in the car, and the Harbour Bridge was closed for about 20 minutes while police checked the structure to ensure no one else was hiding in the area.

The bridge reopened at 9.15pm. When the crashed car was searched, police say a revolver was found on the front seat.

No one was injured in either the ramming of the police car or the later crash. No further information regarding the arrested man or the surrounding circumstances is available.
