Fireworks spark beach blaze

The careless use of fireworks in tinder dry conditions are being blamed as the cause of a large scrub fire on dunes in Papamoa overnight.

Papamoa Volunteer Fire Brigade were called to the dunes near the intersection of Grant Place and Papamoa Beach Road at around 10.25pm on Sunday following reports of an out of control blaze.

Video footage sent in to SunLive (below) shows the extent of the fire in Papamoa last night.

Papamoa Volunteer Fire Brigade deputy fire chief Brent Sandford says about 10 firefighters battled the 'fully involved” blaze for up to an hour – leaving behind a 20m by 15m block of charred flax and grass.

'We believe from people nearby that it was started by fireworks,” says Brent. 'They lit some fireworks off in the bushes and then ran off.

'Luckily the wind wasn't blowing that bad, so it didn't spread too quickly.”

Video footage sent into SunLive show plumes of smoke billowing as the dune vegetation cracked under the heat of the fire.

Brent adds this is the second firework-related fire in the last fortnight, which a worrying concern.

The blaze comes four days after the danger of fire throughout the Western Bay of Plenty and Tauranga City reached 'extreme” levels, prompting a suspension of all new fire permits.

Brent says with such dry conditions, the public need to eliminate any factors that could cause such incidents that hold the potential to become much larger.

'We need to make people aware to get away from the dry grass this time of year,” he adds.

'Just be aware at the moment of the dry conditions.”

Douche bags plus fireworks equals trouble. Agree with the other comments, ban public sale and allow public displays on the date only. Guy Fawkes used to be about one night, now its 3-4 months worth of inconsiderate idiots and parties.

I agree with whatsinaname Fireworks should be banned forever. Public and organized displays fine but not for private use. So what does it take to persuade the government to enforce a ban on same??? Come on government ban the sale fo fireworks to the public forever!!!

Fireworks are annoying, potentially dangerous, and a waste of money, but banning things you don't like or you're scared of is half of this country's problem. I believe you would find that most people would not want fireworks banned and the minority should not rule the majority.

It is about time the sale of fireworks should be banned and only have controlled shows. come on john keys ban them and in the long run save many thousands of dollars on fire call outs and also on burn patients

Opinion Poll Please

I think that the majority would support a ban but JayR doesn't. Perhaps Sunlive would consider running an opinion poll? Personally I think the only place for fireworks is professionally organized displays. Imagine the damage this fire could've caused if it was more windy.
