Star-studded event raises $9K

The cliffhanger, double grab and kiss of death were among a handful of tricks entertaining a crowd of about 2000 at an event which is expected to raise $9000 for Cure Kids.

Wheels for Cure Kids organisers Luke Price and Cameron Keogh are so happy with the weekend's event, they are already thinking about next year's extravaganza.

BMX stunts were among the many things at the Wheels for Cure Kids event to keep people entertained.

Luke, a freestyle motocross rider from Tauranga, came up with the idea a few months ago after doing something similar a few years ago.

'We did an event down at Fraser Cover for Yellow Ribbon in 2007,” says Luke, 'and since I have been reinventing myself and getting back on the bike after a four-year break I figured it would be a good idea to do another one.

'One of my major sponsors came up with the idea that he wanted to run an event and I opened my mouth and said I'd done it before, so we jumped at it.”

Luke was joined by fellow fmx riders Billy Clerke and Levi Sherwood is what can only be described as a thrilling, acrobatic show.

Cameron, owner of Worlds End Bar and Restaurant, was delighted with the success of Saturday's show, which also included a display of classic cars and hot rods, and hopes to make it an annual event.

But he knows it's ultimately up to the athletes who are giving their time with Levi Sherwood, for example, normally charging about $20,000 a show.

'We're really grateful for their support which makes it possible and would love to have it locked and loaded for next year,” says Cameron.

It's a feeling shared by Luke, and judging the positive feedback received from the riders, hopes are already high for 2016.
