Assault accused’s bail adjourned

A 40-year-old woman accused of being involved in an assault hours before the body of 19-year-old Takena Tiepa-Ranapia was found will stay behind bars, until Friday at least.

Name suppression for the accused will continue until her next appearance on the grounds the police investigation is still in its early stages.

Police are still investigating the stabbing in Ohauiti which left one person with wounds to his face and hands.

'She also has concerns about her own safety due to retaliation issues,” said defence lawyer Tony Balme.

Takena was found dead in Ohauiti last month following an assault earlier in the morning which left another person with minor stab wounds to his face and hands.

Tony is requesting his client be released on bail to an address out of the Western Bay of Plenty due to safety issues and the fact the police investigation is still ongoing.

The alleged offender was arrested earlier this week and charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily, assault with a weapon and possession of cannabis.

On the assault related charged, the woman is jointly charged with two men aged 36 and 37.

They appeared in Tauranga District Court yesterday and were remanded in custody until January 28.

The men are also facing a murder charge in relation to the death of Takena.

In court today, police prosecutor Sergeant Roy Blomkamp opposed bail for the woman citing the proposed bail address is too close to the Western Bay of Plenty.

He said: 'These are serious charges she faces and vulnerable witnesses are involved in the investigation.

'She (the accused) has gone from being a witness herself to an alleged offender in the matter.”

Judge Peter Rollo took into consideration both the defence and prosecution's submissions and adjourned the bail application until Friday to allow for an appropriate bail address to be pursued.
