Mobile boost for the Mount

Holiday makers at Mount Maunganui will have no problem staying connected this summer thanks to temporary cell sites used to boost network capacity.

Mobile phone giants Vodafone are preparing to roll out the cellsites on wheels (COWs) to cope with the influx of tourists at the popular holiday hotspot.

Mobile phones users at Mount Maunganui are set for a signal boost this summer.

Often used to enhance cellular coverage at major events as well as disaster areas, the devices will help with the influx of visitors to the Mount over the coming months and help satisfy the demand for connectivity via popular social networks.

Vodafone Technology Director Tony Baird says sending in a COW can often save the day.

Tony says: 'Services like Snapchat, Facebook and What's App are increasingly popular.

'They require a significant boost to network capacity in areas like the Mount to ensure customers can keep sharing pictures, posting updates, streaming music and checking work emails over summer – that's where our COWs come in.

'The summer holiday – more than any other time of the year – is about staying close to the things and people who matter.

'Smartphones are at the heart of that now, and while texting and calling are still popular, Kiwis are using data services to stay in touch more and more.”

Vodafone have predicted that 90 percent of its customer base will have a smartphone by next year, and network upgrades have been made to some permanent cell sites at popular holiday destinations.
