Bay of Plenty residents are reporting feeling a shallow earthquake that hit the Eastern Bay of Plenty overnight.
A 2.9 magnitude earthquake hit the region about 11.07pm.
The volcanic activity at White Island remains unchanged following a 3.9 earthquake centred 5km south-west of Whakatane.
GeoNet reports it had a focal depth of 5km and was centred 5km south-west of Whakatane.
The latest quake follows on from one earlier yesterday in Te Kaha.
A 3.7 magnitude earthquake struck around 11.22am and had a focal depth of 64km.
GeoNet says this was a weak earthquake.
The alert level and colour aviation codes at White Island remain normal, meaning there has been no change to volcanic activity since the earthquakes.

An earthquake says Tauranga City Council is the best warning of an impending tsunami - About as effective as a TEXT message! God help us, especially those who live work and play on our coastal margins!
