Shaky night in the Bay

Bay of Plenty residents are reporting feeling a shallow earthquake that hit the Eastern Bay of Plenty overnight.

A 2.9 magnitude earthquake hit the region about 11.07pm.

The volcanic activity at White Island remains unchanged following a 3.9 earthquake centred 5km south-west of Whakatane.

GeoNet reports it had a focal depth of 5km and was centred 5km south-west of Whakatane.

The latest quake follows on from one earlier yesterday in Te Kaha.

A 3.7 magnitude earthquake struck around 11.22am and had a focal depth of 64km.

GeoNet says this was a weak earthquake.

The alert level and colour aviation codes at White Island remain normal, meaning there has been no change to volcanic activity since the earthquakes.
