Counties/Manukau Police have located and are speaking with the driver of a vehicle believed to have been involved in the fatal altercation in Gooch Place, Sommerville, at about 2.15am.

The man is assisting police with the investigation into the death of another in the street.

Detective Senior Sergeant Albie Alexander says it's important the team locates and speaks with as many people as possible who may have information that could progress the investigation.

"Anyone who has information should contact Counties/Manukau Police on 09 263 2709.

"A post-mortem examination of the deceased is scheduled to take place tomorrow after which time we hope to be able to release his name.

"We are working closely with the deceased's family and remain focused on their wellbeing and to ensuring all available information about the circumstances of their loved-one's death is fully investigated."
