Pledging to stop violence

No violence is tolerable is the message of the annual anti-violence campaign, White Ribbon.

Tauranga's worst violence happens at home and Police attend more than 70 callouts for Family Violence every week, says Community Family Violence Co-ordinator, Heather Beddie, who is saddened at the levels of Family Violence in Tauranga Moana.

Police attend more than 70 callouts for domestic violence a week.

'Nobody should ever live in fear, in their own home,” she says.

'Tauranga Moana Abuse Prevention Strategy (TMAPS) have a four-pronged approach for their White Ribbon event calendar this year, reaching a wider audience, in even larger parts of the community to spread this important message as far as they can.

'Family violence affects all parts of the community, across all different types of families, across poor families, wealthy families, across race - everyone.”

The 2014 campaign starts on Wednesday, at 12 pm, with a presentation event at the Bay Of Plenty Polytechnic Windermere campus.

The event is hosted by students, for students, to raise awareness of the White Ribbon message.

Free food will be on offer for students who attend the event in A Block.

One of the speakers will do a small presentation on family violence and male students in the audience will be invited to take the White Ribbon pledge - a voluntary verbal pledge for men of all ages to take around not committing or condoning violence in their families or homes.

A second, similar event, will be held at the Bethlehem Tertiary Institute campus on Tuesday, October 21, at 12pm at The Hub.

This event is once again aimed at men of all ages, informing, educating and raising general awareness of family violence, as an issue.

Heather says the White Ribbon annual campaign aims to lower the high incidence of family violence in New Zealand by raising public awareness and gathering support for anti-violence measures around the country.

The campaign particularly centres on men talking to other men about the issue, in ways that men understand and can relate to.

The White Ribbon pledge for men to be part of is: ‘I promise never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence towards women.'
