Safe stolen in ram raid

A safe containing cash and cigarettes was stolen from the Z service station in Omokoroa on Sunday, after the thieves used a stolen 4x4 to ram their way through the wall.

Tauranga Police believe at least two men were involved in the daring ram raid, on State Highway 2, which was carried out at around 10.30pm.

The vehicle, a red Suzuki Escudo with licence plate FHP696, had been stolen from the Bowentown boat ramp earlier on Sunday.

The crime may be linked to a similar burglary at Omokoroa bowling club on Monday night, where another safe was stolen by two offenders in an unidentified vehicle.

Police are appealing for information about the Suzuki, as well as anyone suddenly in possession of large quantities of cigarettes or cash.

Anyone with information is to contact Tauranga Police on 07 577 4300, or call the Crimestoppers organisation anonymously on 0800 555111.
